August 19, 200917 yr Smoltz has been a glorified batting practice pitcher this season. In 8 starts, he had not one quality outing. He has an ERA of 8.33, has given up 59 hits in only 40 innings and teams were hitting .343 against him. He was absolutely destroyed his last few outings. Boggs, while not exactly overwhelming himself, has a 4.58 ERA in 37 innings. I would hardly say Smoltz is a meaningful "upgrade" over Boggs.
August 19, 200917 yr I think Smoltz might be better in St. Louis because pitching in the National League Central Division should be a little easier than pitching in the American League East.
August 20, 200917 yr The last two guys the Cards have gotten from Boston(Pineiro and Lugo) haven't done too bad in a Cardinal uniform. I really like this deal a lot. It's costing the Cards next to nothing and they get a guy who is BETTER then Boggs and maybe a right handed pitcher to set up Franklin.

In the other six starts, he had a 6.47 ERA and allowed 41 hits in 32 innings.

August 20, 200917 yr Big key, it is not costing the Cardinals but a few cases of beer sold at the park. If he does decent, great. If not, then not much was invested.
August 21, 200917 yr Big key, it is not costing the Cardinals but a few cases of beer sold at the park. If he does decent, great. If not, then not much was invested. Except if he quickly takes your team out of a ball game like he consistently did with the Red Sox.
August 21, 200917 yr Except if he quickly takes your team out of a ball game like he consistently did with the Red Sox. Cardinals have a little more room to play with. they have a 6 game lead where the Sox are in a battle for the wild card spot.

August 24, 200917 yr His first start will be in pitcher-friendly San Diego against the woeful Padres ... about as good a situation as Smoltz could be in. We'll see ... Turned out to be a great situation to start in.
August 24, 200917 yr Nice outing by Smoltz - 5 INN, 0 ER, 9 K's. Next start will be a bit more telling though.
August 25, 200917 yr Nice outing by Smoltz - 5 INN, 0 ER, 9 K's. Next start will be a bit more telling though. He will have the Nationals in the next start in Busch on Saturday. I will be in attendance. It will be nice to be there when Smoltz is introduced to the St. Louis crowd.
August 25, 200917 yr Definitely a confidence boost for him on his return to the NL.. And once the postseason reaches Smoltz is near unstoppable.
