I really do not know why everyone thinks north is really that great? They have some nice players, but they cannot win big games. Sure they do win 20 games a year, but when they play good teams they usually lose. Oldham may not win the district this year, but Holland has more kids out for basketball than have been out in a while at Oldham County. Looks to be a interesting year in the 29th.

 

I agree that they have yet to get a signature victory, but then again, they are an awfully young school (only 6 seasons). On the other hand, I do think you have to respect the fact that they are one of the few teams in the entire state with a winning record vs. Shelby County.

That's the rumor, but I haven't seen anybody's basketball schedule yet... I'm too busy with football right now.

OC has been here forever, they are the larger school, and should wipe the floor in the region-yet haven't...lately. Holland will not find it so easy to get the Williamstowns on his schedule like he has at Henry, as someone previously stated in another thread. Anyway, North is doing good things and will be a team worth watching VERY soon. :thumb:

Holland had to play Williamstown as they were in the conference that Henry County play in. Here is my problem with North, dont crown them until they win a big game. They have more than enough talent to do it, but it always seems like they can't win a big game.

While I agree with you that North has done an absolutely phenomenal job of building a high-quality program in a very short period of time, taking a swipe at Oldham County hardly serves to validate your point.

 

Why exactly should Oldham be "wiping the floor" in the region??? They aren't the largest school in the region, and there are several schools just as big (Grant County, Anderson County, South Oldham, Simon Kenton, Shelby County, etc.) And really, what does the fact they've been around "forever" really have to do with anything?

 

At Henry County, Holland was bound to play a lot of the smaller schools because Henry County belongs to the North Central Kentucky Conference. The NCKC games constitute a rather large part of the team's schedule and are required. Who he schedules at Oldham will be very interesting because he will have a much greater freedom to pursue a more aggressive schedule.

 

Perhaps you haven't been around the region very long... Oldham County has won the 8th Region four times in the past nine years, including the 2007 crown. Just because the Colonels haven't been a power the past two years hardly qualifies as a long absence... Only Shelby County has won the 8th Region more times than Oldham County...

Let's get this thread back on track...confine the discussion to North Oldham.

I think what Horse is talking about is that Oldham has built tradition because they have been around forever (and been successful for so long), and should know how to win the "Big Game". Oldham should be considered a favorite yearly in what might be one of the weaker OVERALL regions in KY-an opinion shared by many in surrounding regions. They have the population and TRADITION to be there every year. While North is an extremely young program by comparision.

 

Holland's schedule is notorious for being soft. (Model, Cornerstone Christian, Whitefeild Academy, Sayre, Paris)-just look at the past 4 years-not an overwhelming scheduleing process-but you have to do something to build some confidence and a foundation of success. That being said, he did what he was supposed to do...win most of those games. I think he's a good ball coach, and don't have enough info. to make an accurate inference about what he will do at OC, but I wish them luck.

 

As for Conferences, you DON'T have to play in them. They are by choice. Using football as my example, you CHOOSE to participate in that conference, but don't have to schedule the games. If Henry were serious about getting their program competetive then they should consider a competitive Conference (they are the biggest fish in that conference aren't they?) But this discussion isn't about them.

 

As for North, I think that all young programs struggle to win the "big one", and when they do we generally recognize that as the "turning point" for the program. They will get it, don't know when, but they will get it. I wish them luck and look forward to catching a game or two this season. Good luck to all the teams in the 8th. :thumb:

None of the three Oldham schools belong to a conference - it really doesn't make sense for them to belong - , so I guess it's something of a moot point in this discussion, but I always was under the impression that if you belonged to a conference, you had to play the games. If you don't play the games, what's the point in being a conference member? There are trophies to be won - both team and individual - within the conferences, and they can only be won by playing the games.

 

North certainly does not yet have the tradition of Oldham County, but for a school that's only been around since the 2003-4 season, they've done a remarkable job on the basketball court on the boys' side.

 

I agree that OVERALL the 8th is currently one of the weaker regions. We are tending to be a "pie crust" region with 3-4 really competitive teams at the top that can play with almost anybody in the state, and 12-13 teams that really have little chance of winning the region. But this is something that evolves over time... I can remember when the 9th wasn't really considered to be all that powerful...now it's one of the "Big 3" regions. I can also remember when Region 8 had 6-7 top-tier programs the same season... (maybe just another sign I'm getting old!!! :lol: )

Actually Hicks isn't a high school transfer. He has never been to any other high school since he is a freshman.

I heard that Shelby County may be challenging his eligibility (not sure it will do any good). Also was told that Hicks's family did not move to Oldham County, but that he is living with his AAU coach.

Yeah considering he is just starting high school this year I don't know what they can do. The AAU connection is probably a big reason why he is there. If thats where he wants to go I don't see a problem with it, unless he was recruiting. As far as that goes I don't think we have any idea about that.

I think you have to give a lot of credit to Coach Edelen. He came into a situation at North Oldham where there was a lot of coaching turnover. He stabilized the program and has started building them into a consistent winner!! When or will they break through?? No one knows, but he definitely has Mustang Nation Rollin'!!!

Had his AAU coaches' son been going, say, to St. X or Manual, however, it appears he would have wound up there. North just got the benefit of the fact the AAU coaches' son is in North's district, and Hicks was headed somewhere besides Shelby County. Word out of Shelby County is that it was a given that he would not be enrolling at SCHS.

I don't know anything about the past or present coaching situation at North, but I do have an opinion about a "revolving door of coaches".

 

I think too many times parents look only to be critical of coaches. These same folks usually have a personnel agenda behind their criticisms. They don't look at the coaches strengths and the good things they do for "the program", because their personnel agendas aren't being met. When these criticisms get out of hand I have witnessed coaches getting "the pink slip" from their principals, because they want the problem to go away. A new coach is hired, and the same folks start making noise again about their disatisfactions.

 

Supporting coaches in the best interest of the program as opposed to individual interests, leads to continuity, and the opportunity to build a consistently successful program.

 

Sounds like North Oldham is on the right track.
