Building a program is one thing.. move-ins are 'not' to be included in building a program...natives in that area are getting restless with the move ins!!

 

Isn't that area of the county a big area for "move ins" (especially from Louisville-big homes-big money-lures people out of the city), you build your program with what you have...including those who "move in". Doesn't count? Should there be an asteric next to the wins due to kids who "move in"? If that were the case Lex Cath, Scott Co., Clark Co (countless others)....etc would all have asterics.

The problem is when you start getting more than one transfer, the problem is when one of the transfers is not living with his parents, the problem is he played for another region team.

Why? Unless a coach is recruiting he has nothing to do with it other than maybe hes building a good program and players from the surrounding areas want to play for the program.

If you look at last year's Sweet 16, Holmes had 3 transfers, Hazard had 3 transfers, Mason Co. had a transfer, LexCath had 2 transfers, and I was thinking Shelby Valley had a transfer. The point is it happens all over the state. And not all transfers are just because of basketball.

Who else? Nobody anywhere seems to know who this mystery transfer is... I'm not saying there isn't one - I truly don't know - but I talk to the officials at all three Oldham County high schools constantly, and I haven't heard anything about another basketball player coming to North from another district...according to posts, above, there's a kid coming from Eastern, but he wasn't a player at Eastern last year... :confused:

I'm not saying there isn't a kid from Eastern - there may well be - all I know is that North is saying that they have no info on a basketball player transferring from Eastern. I won't stick this person's name out there, but he's pretty high up at NOHS... I guess we'll all see. I could be wrong, just passing along what I know and have been told.

Here is the bottom line. I have spoken with a few people on each side of it. Crestwoodknowitall is upset because he is from Crestwood (South Oldham). The facts are these. The family that he is living with is the AAU head coach and his best friend from the AAU team who was home schooled until this year and is in the North Oldham district. The coach is not on staff at North, but did go to Georgetown team camp to help due to the number of teams they took and he helped coach a team that contained his middle school age son (7th grade) only. When I asked how many kids transferred in the answer was 2, Hicks and a kid that went to Eastern, but never played basketball. When asked how many kids have ever come in to North the answer was 3 in 7 years (including these 2) so whether they are high profile or not it is clearly not a pattern. The person I asked also went on to say that Mr. Crestwoodknowitall's team from last year had 2 kids from North Oldham Middle and HS's programs in the past and that they got some "transfers" in their loaded freshman class that were from Oldham County's district. Perfectly legal with open enrollment, but obviously not the same issue. Shoe is never the same on the other foot.

 

I speak with many people at South often and am close to the issue on that side and they are upset, but only due to the magnitude of the kid. ColonelMike hit it on the head when it is either right or wrong. Check the records in Jefferson County on "limited guardianship transfers" and kids that move in with others, it happens all the time.

 

I was even told by someone close to the North program that an 8th region coach said, "Why wouldn't he want to play for you in the style and manner you play. It's fun" Kudos to Log Mountain Boy for stating that.

 

All i know is I won't miss the Shelby/North or South/North games this year, do they have reserved seats??!!

And the style everyone hates in Shelby produces runs to the final 4 in the state tournament. Just look at last year when SO beat them and shouldn't even been in the game.

North is a run and gun style of play, full court pressure, etc. Edelen (the coach) generally plays 10-11 kids a game - he has to.

 

I know what Papa Pigskin is saying, and there may be some truth to it, but in fairness to North, they were so battered by illness and injury last year in the tournaments, they didn't have anyone to turn to to carry them. Much like Anderson two years ago, which showed up to the 8th Region tournament with the team buried under illness.

 

That said - from the North games I saw - I think they struggled from chemistry issues, too. Just an observation.

Actually, I'm not so convinced that SCHEME is as important as FUNDAMENTALS or DEFENSE. You can play almost any scheme and be fundamentally sound (or not). I think that some "run & gun" teams choose that style because creating chaos on the floor can sometimes hide a team's fundamental flaws. However, merely being a run and gun type of team doesn't mean you AREN'T fundamentally sound. And we've seen every scheme imaginable win the state...

 

After fundamentals, I'd rank DEFENSE as the second most important piece to the puzzle. The 8th Region has had a long, long history of teams winning the title with top-tier defenses. Gary Forrest's Oldham County squads were famous for their stingy defense; I think Mike Clark's Shelby squads don't get enough credit for their defense; Glen Drury (Anderson County) is a Gary Forrest-clone in his devotion to defense-first; and when Scott County was in the 8th, they got more PR for their offense, but it was their DEFENSE that created their offense....

 

Whether North is FUNDAMENTALLY strong enough or DEFENSIVELY strong enough for the 2009-10 season remains to be seen.

If thats the case I disagree with Papa Pigskin's observation. Running and gunning does work. Lou. Central ran and pressed a lot last year and fired a lot of 3s too. LexCath and Scott Co. both play up and down. When Scott Co. has the personnel they press a lot. They didn't last year with a bigger lineup that I noticed. Ballard is another team that has been extremely successful running and pressing.

 

And I totally agree with you on playing good fundamental defense.

Scott and Lexington Catholic have better players. They both have add D-1 guards the past 3 years. When you have better players you can play that way and win. When talent is close you lose. I think the reason why is what colonel Mike said the other team will eventually get back on defense, the other team will eventually take care of the ball.
