Who gets the NDA job?

Featured Replies

Any confirmation on who has actually shown interest?

My best guess at the 3 finalists are the following:

Kes Murphy - Currently at CCH as a frosh assistant.

Marty Petroze - Currently at NDA and has been for the past 6 or so years.

Dick Maile - No idea where he's at currently.

I know Murphy & Petroze are interested.

You are missing my point. Maile coaching for free does nothing to the tuition cost. I am speaking of parents having to pay tuition (NDA) or sending little Cindy to (Dixie,Beechwood,Scott,Boone Co) for FREE! Enrollments are dropping. All the tuitions at all Catholic schools in NKY were froze this year due to the economy which meant all teachers salaries were froze as well. I do not think they can continue this or they will lose teachers and much needed work at the schools will not get done. To be honest I would say NDA's coach makes around 3k and most public schools around 6k...both underpaid IMO. It just makes my point that Maile if hired would save NDA about 3k if they chose to do this. This is only about 1/2 a years tuiton for 1 girl.

Coaching salaries are not considered or factored into the tuition. They are covered by the sports fees and fruit sale that NDA does every winter. Tuition is strictly for the academics. $3-4K for private, $5-6K in public depending on rank, education level and years of service - it is a sliding scale. I would be pressed to believe someone from the public school system would jump. IMO - Marty Petroze is the best choice given his knowledge, personality, and recent experience in the program. Kes - dunno. BTW - I've never known Dick to do anything for "free".:taz:

I agree that Marty Petroze is probably the best man for the job.

I don't know if he's the leading candidate or not, but it'd be very difficult to overlook the man who has been on the bench & in the program for the past 5 or 6 seasons.

We all know that these three are interested, have applied whatever. They probably have been since day one, this tells me that NDA is wanting someone else or they would have been hired already. No reason to wait this long, all are qualified canidates. Maybe the parents cant decide...

Grapevine has interviews this week and next.....

Then a decision. So, look for something around the 16th. Three good coaches, probably can't go wrong with any of them.

My money is still on Kes Murphy, followed by Petroze and then Maile in a photo finish.

Marty Petroze was at St. Henry until they hired Shannon Turner. I think that was for the 2006/2007 season.

If I remember correctly, he moved to ND in the Fall of 2006. Three years ago.

Correct.:thumb:

A good majority of the parents at CCH/NDA are people who get way too involved and are too mouthy and really know nothing of what they talk about. I don't know much about the NDA situation, but I know CCH is parent driven like no other. There is a reason coaches have cited the politics and parental interference in things they didn't like..

What HS basketball coaches don't tolerate parental involvement, especially on the girls side? Not sure this is just an NDA or CCH issue. I suspect it is pretty much universal in HS ball. Is there a coach who is immune to the parents and simply coach the players?

Parental involvement is different than discussing playing time or line-ups with the coach. I think that is what Oscar was speaking about.

If a coach does allow "input" from parents they are just setting themselves up for trouble.

It is with many years experience I say this. 5 players on floor=10 happy parents, 13 players on team=26 parents total. This means 16 parents not so much...:D

Coach needs to be deaf to the stands, focus on the girls, and not grow rabbit ears. Takes some backbone and consistency to be a good coach these days.

It also takes an administration that will back the coach. You are starting to see some very good coaches think really hard before applying for coaching positions now a days. It is usually the coaches that have the backbone that end up not enjoying their position.

Agree - you need the whole package for a long-term, successful program no matter what the sport.

Agreed, unfortunately most administrators will allow pressure from parents to sway them. They just do not want to keep dealing with the complaints. I have seen it happen far too often and now far too frequently.

That is why principals always need to defer to the AD. Principals should not want to have to handle any athletic issues, they have too much on their plate to worry about sports. They need to just be fans.
