Who gets the NDA job?

Featured Replies

After the greatest high school basketball coach at CovCath (Mote Hils) left to coach at upstat Northern Kentucky University, Dick Maile coached at CovCath. If I not mistaken he was at CovCath just a couple of years.

Trust me Oscar, CC never played for Coach Maile at CovCath!

You know, it quite all right to have an opinion, but when you are called out as to why you have that opinion and then just LOL yourself out of it, well your opinion starts to mean very little to others.

Okay, and to be honest, this situation isn't something that I really care if my opinion matters to you or not. I know your opinion doesn't hold much weight with me so If I were you I wouldn't take it so seriously.

It is nothing personal, I just don't think he'd be a good fit as coach at NDA. And I have every right not to come out and go into depth about the reasons I don't think he would be. And I truly don't mind at all if my opinion means little to you or anyone else lol, I'm not on the hiring committee so all it is is an opinion, don't worry...

Let me restate my point about CC never playing for Coach Maile! CC never played for Coach Maile when Coach Maile was the Head Coach at CovCath!

lol, wow.

It doesn't matter if he did or didn't, that isn't going to change anything? I just thought I remembered him saying he played for him at one point. Obviously I was wrong since you say so..

I played for Dick and I'd like to hear your reasons as to why he wouldn't be a good choice. I can handle it. It is a bit questionable that you have reasons but won't share them...

I don't get why you all don't understand that I don't care if it is questionable or means little to you. It's just an opinion and it holds no weight in the grand scheme of things. I.dont.think.he.is.a.good.fit.for.the.job.at.NDA. That is all that there is to say really.

I heard from a very reliable source that Dick Maile did apply for this job. Same source told me Kes Murphy is not interested. I honestly think that none of Coach Darpels former assistants want this job for a variety of reasons, some have been discussed in prior posts. They should just give Dick a chance.

Yes, because I really don't need to nitpick at the reasons I don't feel he is a good choice for the position, because he's a good man and I like the family. I think it'd be a mistake to hire him...but I'm not doing the hiring so it doesn't matter. I remember you saying you played ball for CCH a few years back, and I'd imagine you played under him or at least knew him, so I respect that it is touchy for you...and even more reason there is no need for me to get into it lol.

Saying that he's not a good choice & backing up your reasoning with actual thoughts / experiences isn't nitpicking.

Nitpicking is you don't like the way he sits on the bench. You don't like the way he combs his hair, or works the refs.

Saying it'd be a mistake to hire him is the equivalent of saying he's a poor coach, or not qualified. Dick is neither.

I don't know that Dick is the answer for the NDA job. Obviously, like all of us, he has his weaknesses. He's older & he's jumped around from program to program. If you're looking for a steady coach who's going to be around for the next 5 - 7 years, they should probably look elsewhere. But the man loves the game and is one of the greatest students of the game that I've been around.

Nobody is asking you to go in depth about why he wouldn't be a good fit. We're just asking your opinion as to why you think that way.

You've made it pretty clear that you don't think he'd be a good choice. That's fine. I'm not sold on him being the best choice either; however, I think he's more than qualified to run the program.

I'm just interested to hear why you think he's a poor choice.

He's coached at NDA before so he knows the school & the environment. He's been around NKY basketball since the 50's. He had a hall of fame college career at LSU. It seems to me that he'd be more than qualified.

This isn't pertaining to him in particular, but having a great career as a college player doesn't always translate to being a great coach. I think he was a good coach...I don't get over enthused about him as a coach, but he wasn't bad.

And I just don't think he'd be a good fit for the program, short term or long term. If you want to know reasons, I'll give you one of the main ones and leave it at that. In the system I played in and many of the systems around the country that I've witnessed where I've lived...I don't think it is right for parents/grandparents/immediate family members (you get my drift) to coach their kids/grandkids etc etc. It was never allowed in the programs I was a part of, and those programs were very well ran and had a lot of success. I'm quite aware NKY is different about this, and I don't like it, and I know no one or very few will agree...but that is where I stand on it. And I believe Mr. Maile has some granddaughters coming up the line..

Having family in the program would be the only reason I would hesitate to hire Dick Maile.

However, I think you're underestimating how often teams are coached by someone with family in the program.

I would check your source. I can confirm that Kes is 100% interested in the job.

JMO but I think you hire the best COACH possible. Who cares if they have family in the program. Most coaches are more demanding on thier own family than the other players on the team. I know it is hard for parents with kids on the team to understand but if a coach is giving special treatment or additional playing time to family over deserving players then they are not doing the job and should be dealt with by the AD. A good coach will not sacrifice his or her job to do that.

Bring Paule Buser up there:dancingpa

:ylsuper: I agree with you wildcat14

Very interested and I believe is the front runner.

I'm still giving 2 to 1 odds it will be Kes!!!

That's why I said I would "hesitate."

I'm not underestimating it, I know how often it goes on, especially here. I just don't think it should happen. (unless we're talking rec league).

In the programs I've been a part of, and I've lived in 9 different states, 5 of which I played sports in, and even played basketball outside of the country for a summer. In all but one of the situations I was a part of, family was not allowed to coach family. And it worked, and the programs were successful long term and are widely known because of it. Did I played a sport that was coached by my dad or mom when I was a young kid? Yes. But when it came to high school, AAU and upper level play, it was never done.

That is one of the bigger reasons I don't think he is right for the job.
