August 3, 200917 yr That is the danger of a young pitcher. It does sound like Tommy John. A young pitcher vs a young bat, the bat is always gonna be safer but the Reds needed pitching. You win some and ya lose some. Hopefully he can come back. IMO the Reds should have had more foresight....look at our outfield. :ohbrother: I know that hindsight is 20-20, but regardless of what happens to Volquez, we could use Hamilton so much more than Edison right now....
August 3, 200917 yr You're wrong. Pryor clearly had flaws in his mechanics and everyone knew it. It caught up to him. What? Mark Prior was widely considered to have some of the best mechanics around. Really? There were some baseball people that thought Prior might survive the overwork because his mechanics were so sound. Now Wood ... that's another story. Exactly. :thumb: How is that trade now? I'm assuming "that trade" is the Josh Hamilton one? If so, it's still worked out well for the Reds. Volquez has missed a lot of time, but so has Hamilton. Plus, I don't think the Reds need another outfielder hitting below .230.

Hamilton is hitting .222 with 7 HR & 5 SB. He's also spent significant time on the DL this season.

Until Harang the Reds seem to NEVER have any pitching. How many years have we said we need a pitcher? People went nuts over the Cory Liddle signing..... If Voloquez didn't get hurt we are happy right now.
August 3, 200917 yr From what I'm hearing and reading, he also had a flexor mass too, that also needed to be fixed. It sounds like there is a good chance he will not be pitching next year.
August 4, 200917 yr Not only did Volquez pitch in the WBC, but he also pitched in winter ball against the Reds wishes. They said tonight that in his first start in winter ball he threw 100 pitches, when he was told to only throw 50. This was found out through the manager of the opposing team that Volquez faced. I dont think this is blood on Dusty's hands.
August 4, 200917 yr Interesting that you posted his winter ball stats LABS. I saw a quote in the Sunday paper about Volquez's injury, and Dusty had a comment stating that with any type of surgery he wouldn't be playing Winter ball. I figured Dusty wasn't too happy about him playing during the winter.

I'm not going to blame Dusty for this either, but they did stretch him out at the end of the season last year when they thought they had a chance to win 81 games. I hope they are hesitant w/ Bailey and Cueto the rest of the way this year.
August 4, 200917 yr Winter ball is a risky proposition. It can put a lot of strain on a pitcher's arm after having pitched an entire season beforehand and then head right into spring training and the next season. I had an ortho tell me that throwing a baseball is an extremely unnatural motion for the human arm and puts a lot of wear and tear on the joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Not that it shouldn't be done, of course, but that caution should be taken with the amount of continual usage on it. Winter is a great time to let the arm rehab and rest and I think that has much to do with injuries like Volquez.
August 4, 200917 yr Dusty had little to no impact on Mark Prior being injured. If you recall he was a really good pitcher until he collided with, then 2nd baseman, Marcus Giles of the Atlanta Braves. Messed both players up pretty bad and Prior nor Giles was the same sense. You sure about that?
