My stinking 1996 Jeep Cherokee doesn't qualify. According to fueleconomy.gov it gets a combined (keyword) 19 mpg. There's no way this thing gets that much. On a good day I might get 15 mpg out of it.

Well, after adjusting my driving habits on the website (65% city driving and 35% highway driving) it bumped my MPG's down to a combined 18. I suppose I now qualify, but I guess I'd have to actually talk with a dealership.

I was going through the site last night as a guy said his Tacoma qualified, and I didn't believe him. Sure enough, it did. A 4cyl, manual Tacoma is listed at 17mph. I had the same truck years ago, and on a bad tank, I didn't get any lower than 19mph. Some of these numbers seem odd as we were looking through them last night.

Does adjusting your driving habits factor into getting the credit? I just skimmed over the website and it seems like the red "COMBINED" under New Estimated mpg is what it's based off of. Mine was at 19 as well.

Go to cars.gov and click on the fueleconomy.gov tab. Click on 'I'm Ready to Begin' button, and then follow along selecting the GVWR, year, make, model, and engine/tranny. It will display the combined MPG, and it will tell you if you qualify. There are no adjustments that can be made to these numbers. You can then go on and select the car you want to buy, and it will tell you if that vehicle qualifies, and if so, how much you'll get for your trade-in (3500 or 4500).

Yes, especially if not properly maintained. However, it would only be a slight decrease. The numbers given on the website seem a couple miles lower than anything I've ever experienced.

What did you buy ?

This is a great program for people to get into a new car....but it's terrible for parents that are trying to find an inexpensive truck for their son (like we are).

Wife bought Dodge Avenger. 3500 gov't money. 4500 Dodge rebate. Pretty sweet deal. She's happy with it.

Well, my 99 Buick Le Sabre didn't qualify. Neither does my 95 Subaru Wagon.
