July 14, 200917 yr A lot of hitters move in the box in slow pitch or walk into it, as they call it. Usually no official boxes are drawn or if they are it is gone shortly after the game starts.

I never umped but played long enought to see this several times. What if the batted ball (after the batter was interfered with) goes into a gap and the batter could have easily taken 2nd? The call I have always seen is: the ump signals for interference and the play is continued to see what happens. If the batted ball is caught for an out, the batter is awarded first. If the ball is played as a basehit; no harm/no foul.

It is just one of those things. Take for example, the "infield fly rule". a lot of people think that it is a dead ball. The batter is automatically out, but the runners can advance at their own risk.
