I can honestly say I'm not real excited about any of the candidates mentioned. Holiday would obviously intrigue me the most as a Reds fan, but would he be worth what he would cost, and be much of an upgrade over the Nix/Gomes platoon?

True, but (correct me if I'm wrong) isn't Oakland a pitcher's park? Holliday had some sick numbers back at Coors Field, and I'd like to see what he could do at GABP, as well as the fact that pitchers are going to pitch him quite differently then they would Gomes/Nix.

Huge difference in ballparks ... and Nix's numbers are dropping fast, not unexpected as he got regular exposure.

Willingham and Wigginton could provide some help at a reasonable price ... I doubt that either player would command more than a middling prospect.

It is. Holliday would most likely do very well in GABP, but they'd have to give up a lot to get him. I'd like to see E5 return and see if he can provide a spark...then if his return doesn't help out, look at other options.

They may very well go with who they have this season. I see SS and CF as a bigger issue than LF or 3rd.

 

Walt has his work cut out for him to figure out the SS issue for next season. I'd like them eat Willy's contract and figure something else out for CF but I don't see that happening.

Out of those targets I believe the Reds would have the best chance of landing Josh Willingham and I think he could possibly end up as being a really good pickup.

They've gone basically a month without one of their top pitchers. They've gone two months without E5, who may not be the best player, but would have helped on the offense more than some think. It's almost July and they are 2.5 back...it's probably not likely they make the playoffs, but like I said, stranger things have happened.

While they are only 2.5 games out they are still just 37-37. Anything can happen in the playoffs but while the Reds staff is as strong as any in the league there are other things to consider. In the playoffs you mostly face the top of the other team's starters and bullpen. Most of the contenders can match up with them at the top of their staff and still have better offenses. None of the players mentioned in the article are good enough to make me think that they can make the Reds favorites in the Central and if that is the case why give up prospects when they have such a young core and should be better next season?
