North Oldham's new defensive hirings

Featured Replies

Just heard about the new defensive coaching replacements at North Oldham. Coach Martin made two good choices in Irv Hoffman and Rick Young. Martin stole Hoffman away from St X and I understand he talked Rick Young out of taking a couple of other jobs to come coach at North..Martin brought in a couple of good hires last season to go along with a solid staff. I know both Hoffman and Young well and they can coach defense. Their experience together has to be over forty years. Now that I think of it, Martin's staff probably has well over 250 years of coaching experience.

Martin is a good head coach and and has built a good program.

Bottom line, Billy Martin can pick his coaches but not his players. As a former coach and knowing something about the players he has coming back. I do not see him coming to Frankfort and beating our Wolverines. I don't really see North winning a district game.

But it was two great hires. :thumb:

Hills will have a solid team this year. That district is very competitive.

Sounds like the Western Hills / North Oldham game is about to heat up his season.

Oh Govenor- Here you go again! You are correct and incorrect. We can pick coaches and we can not pick players, but we have gone from 29 players in 06 to 79 players in 09. I am a little fuzzy in math, but that is a lot more to chose from. I agree with Football Addict that this will be a tough district again.

For your 2nd point, Irv Hoffman and Rick Young are great hires. Both have about 15 years of defensive coordinating expereince and about 45 years altogether. They will add to an already solid staff and are solid people as well. WIN/WIN

Hills should have a solid team this season and should be considered the district favorite. They return 8 starters on offense and 9 starters on defense. For the first time in many years expectations are high for Hills - will have to see how they play with these expectations. Numbers are up (around 60 kids) and attendance at off-season work outs has been good. Look for QB Dylan Curry (6'7", 245 lbs) to have a monster year. Should be an exciting year in this district.

You're doing well as a head coach if you get ONE guy on staff with all the intangibles both these guys bring to a staff:

1. cares about and is willing to sacrifice for his players

2. knows the success of the program is more important than his own selfish needs

3. is willing to spend the "above and beyond" time it takes without complaining

4. doesn't have to be prodded to help with the "non-X's-and-O's" stuff

5. LOYAL--not afraid to complain or suggest...but ONLY face-to-face in the coaches office and never 'behind-the-back' of a fellow coach

...and Billy's got TWO; he's one lucky coach (as am I)!

Good luck 'stangs.

Why can't a program's supporters, whose hasn't seen a lot of success over the years, have a little humility when they start having some. Fortunately for Hills, I am pretty sure Jake doesn't speak for the coaches.

Jake...shame, shame.

Not a chance. :notworthy:
