Obama costing consumers and auto industry

Featured Replies

No.

No one is forcing consumers to buy anything.

I don't understand our President's plan. I'm not as familiar with CAFE as most. Can you or someone explain it to me?

Shall we be forced to?

I'm curious to hear your response, not being a smart alec. Does the Federal Government have the right to force to us to purchase cars that we clearly have not been purchasing. Does the United States Constitution and its Amendments give the Federal Government the right to do this?

The government, I would say, has a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment for its citizens. Reducing the amount of Carbon in the air is a step in doing that.

Just like telling paint mfgs. that they can't produce lead base paint anymore, or private citizens they can't straight pipe their waste into the Cumberland River.

It boggles my mind how some people twist things.

Listen all you right wing, oil slurping, tree killing, this is my world so I can do what ever I want with it while I'm alive be darned its effects to the next generation people on here. (Just kidding.... sort of) GETTING OFF OIL IS GOOD.

Getting off oil means moving away from our international relationships with disreputable nations of the Middle East. It means no longer having to prop up near dictator like heads of state in order to ensure stability. It means less of our money gets funneled to those we currently find our most immediate enemies (Islamic Terrorists). It means we don't have to care about Israel at all.

Now of course the implementation of this specific plan won't accomplish any of this. But it does continue us on a path to reduce our foreign oil dependence, which in my opinion is a major national security issue. Oh and it also helps the environment.

Very familiar with it. Didn't like it before; don't like it now. And if voicing my opinion opposed to it constitutes piling on to you, then so be it. I thought I was just exercising my right to free speech.

Please take no offense.

At a high level: The govt requires automakers to meet a certain MPG figure for their fleet of vehicles they sell. So the higher the CAFE requirements go the more high MPG cars have to be made OR the better the bigger autos have to be in the world of MPG.

Basically its a tax and its forcing Americans to buy small cars.

We like trucks and SUVs, its been proven time and time again, given reasonable gas prices we choose those.

Obama wants to raise raise gas, coal, and whatever so that we have a choice. Choice of going broke or buying what you want.

Let me add one thing. The measurement also takes into account the vehicles that are actually selling. So the more trucks you sell (ie those that lower the avg) the more high MPG vehicles you have to sell to get the overall fleet upto the standard.

This will have an obvious impact on GM and Ford as they have the two highest selling vehicles - Silverado and the F150 respectively.

It also means that car companies lose money on a certain sector of their manufacturing, because they are forced to manufature cars that the vast majority of Americans don't want. They have to make a certain number of these cars and basically get rid of them in any way they can.

You are more than welcome to get rid of your oil slurping, tree killing car and purchase a bicycle to replace it. I promise that none of us will stop you.:D

As to the bolded, how does getting off oil change our position in re Israel? Do they export any oil to the U.S.? Wouldn't abandoning Israel in favor of the oil producing Arab countries be in our best interests when we are dependent on oil make more sense, but we have not done so. In my mind we are even more likely to support Israel if we lose our dependency on oil because we then don't have to worry about what the oil producing Arab countries think about us supporting Israel. Explain how my reasoning is faulty.

The more I think about it the more I've come to accept your assumption as correct. Your right I'm wrong.

My initial thinking was that Israel allows us a military pathway/jump point/ally in terms of protecting "our" oil reasources of the Middle East. In otherwords Isreal allows us a to have a gun at the party should we need it. Were Israel to be destroyed we would be completely gunless in that area, therefore we have needed to protect Israel as an entity. I do believe that this thinking has played a part in the past however I don't know that it is any longer relevent. And being it isn't really relevant today anyway, it probably already would have effected our policy with Israel if that were the case. So again I will concede to your arguement on that point.
