I think Mr. Springate would do a great job! I had the pleasure of sitting on the end of the bench and watching him pour it on 12th region apponents in high school. He would get my vote any day! Although I would like to see him in back in Boyle Co. leading them to the state tourneys they attended when he was a player!

Derek Springate worked at WJHS as a special education teacher and was not rehired for this school year. He has been teaching PE at Bryan Station. I don't think West is going to have a PE job open but if Derek gets his certification or working towards it, they may hire him since he's been under Hammonds.

Derek Springate would be an excellent person for the job and he deserves the chance. I had the pleasure of playing against him in high school and getting to know him later in college. He loves to compete and challenge his kids. He also knows how to think outside the box when it comes to coaching. It would be nice to see him take over that program.

My choice would be current girls coach at Garrard Co., Scott Bolin. Scott's a young, entergetic coach that has experience at a few different levels of coaching. He just finished his first season as girls coach of the Lady Lions, he coached the boys team for a couple years as well. He was also an assistant for Centre's Men's team for a year.

I think bringing someone of Scott ability would be great for a school like WJ.

Coach Hammonds is a real good guy. Wonder if everyone is going to be in Admins. at Letcher? Mike Whitaker is going there to coach football and his wife is in Admin. Alot going on in LC. Sure will miss Robert in this area. But he is from the mountains and he is headed back toward home.

West Jessamine needs to look no futher than Derek Springate for next coach> He will be a winner

I agree with those that are saying Springate needs to be the next coach as he is a very good candidate who knows the players and the past system, WJ has a good team coming back from a state semi finalist team, I wouldn't want to mess with things too much. Then you have one of the best PGs in the state in Jarrod Polson directing the team on the court, not too many players in the state runs the team as well as he does.

 

I heard that Whitaker from Hazard is interested in the job as well? If he is, and does get the job, how would that effect the team chemistry with his son coming along with him? Where would he play his son?

I can see Seamonds leaving LCA. The talent there next season will be very low.

I still think Soctt Bolin (Garrard Co.) would be a great hire!

Here are a few things:

1. He was named Area's top coach in his first year of coaching

2. He was assistant coach at Centre College when they were ranked #2 in the nation

3. Coached two players of the year in Div. III

 

Scott may not be a household name right now, but he will soon make a big splash in coaching in Kentucky.

While Scott Bolin's resume might not be stacked up with huge success, he did field quality teams on both the boys and girls side at Garrard County. His first team at Garrard in 2004-05 had one very good player and mostly role players and he was able to coax that bunch to a 15-14 record and into the regional tournament. His second team lost all of the role players and was basically made up of freshman and sophomores and went 5-19. His third team at Garrard was 13-13, playing mostly sophomores. With that foundation Garrard's boys were able to have very good teams the last two years under Lee DeForest.

 

After three years at the helm at Garrard, Bolin left to coach at Centre, where the team was very successful. He then took over a Garrard girls team that was absolutely terrible the season before and finished 15-11. They likely would have been more of a competitor, but their best player was injured during the season and could no longer play.

 

I'm sure West Jessamine will get plenty of good applicants for the position and Coach Bolin might not be the most qualified. But any school who wants a terrific coach, teacher, role model and representative should look no further than Scott Bolin.
