Wisdom Teeth

Featured Replies

Absolutely not true. And you can follow the post op instructions to the letter and still end up with dry socket. Happens far more than a post-op infection.

I was once told to eat a fresh pinapple (not one from a can) the night before and it would help with dry socket. I did it and had no problem with that but does that really work?

Never heard that in my life. Let me know if it works.:thumb:
I get my wisdom teeth taken out tommorow.:puke::ohbrother:

Good luck!

My problem with Wisdom Teeth was that I was (and am) a weenie when it comes to Teeth.

I was told when I was about 16 that I had some rather large wisdom teeth and they should be removed before too long.

I was told this again when I was 30.

Finally, when I was 40 (all different dentists) I was given a paper and no choice and had to have them extracted.

The 40 part was the killer. I went in and they started at 9 am. I don't remember much except pressure and being on my head for a while. I remember the Doctor asking if I was still with him and wiggle my foot.

After the procedure he asked how I felt and the meds and experience were getting the better of me. So I tried to tell him I was nauscious but all I got out was: "I'm nau, I'm nau, I'm naus," and finally he said, "Sick??!!"

I pointed to my nose. He yelled, (or it sounded like he yelled), "Phenegrin, now!" A nurse handed him a needle and WHAM, he took care of Nausea. "your'e not getting sick on my watch," he said.

They took me to a table in another room and I laid there for just a while. Then my wife and mother (who had flown in from KY to take care of me because my wife said, "I'll do anything for you but work with your teeth and mouth!" It was cool because mom is a frustrated wanna be doctor anyway) took me to the van. I remember getting off on the exit to our house and I saw the clock. It said something like 3:00 pm.

I said, "3:00!!" I thought it was maybe 12.

My wife said, 'You've been asleep for hours, he did a bunch of other kids and they left fine while you were sacked out. We even went to lunch for about 90 minutes. :D"

For the next 2 days I laid in bed and drifted in and out of consciousness as my wife kept pushing pain meds on me every time it called for one. I even said I didn't need any once and she said, "Tough, you're going to take it cause I'm not going to listen to you whine."

I then had to do a funeral for the wife of a church member on the 4th day after. I wasn't bad, just swollen (think Marlon Brando and you've got it) and a little drug hungover.

I asked the Doctor later on the follow up and he said, "That's the biggest set of wisdom teeth I've ever had to get out of a human being before. I did everything but put my foot on your face at one point and don't think I wasn't going to if I didn't have to."

I asked him why it was so tough on me and not the kids. He said, "You're old now. Things tend to harden up there the older you get and become more bone like. When you are young, there's more give and pliability."

Since then I've told young people, "Get it done before you become too old like me."

I used it 6 years ago when I had mine out. It was a dental tech in my church that told me about it. I ate about half of the pinapple. I don't know that that is the reason at all but I never had a dry socket problem.

Dry socket does occur in about 5% of all tooth extractions, I never said your protected from it, but if you follow post op instructions you should be ok, dry socket is an inflammation issue. Fact of the matter is if they take a scalpel to your gums like they did mine to cut them out the chance of infection is very realistic but it depends on your immune system as well. Sometimes people are given antibiotics before the procedure and after.

Also not true. During a routine extraction bone is exposed as well as gum tissue. Infection is perhaps only slightly more common when teeth are surgically removed and that is simply due to the size of the area involved, IMO.

My whole mouth feels like flubber right now, and I can't feel anything.

I don't feel any pain at the moment.

Hope thats a good sign.

I went to the dentist today, and I only have to get my bottom 2 taken out.

I get them taken out next week.:ohbrother:

Speaking from experience, don't just get two of the four wisdom teeth taken out......get all four done at the same time.

I had an infected one, some twenty years ago, and elected to have just that one taken out. About one year to the day later (as promised by the oral surgeon who took the one out and suggested I go ahead and do all four at the same time), I was back getting three more taken out. Double the pain and inconvenience.

My suggestion is do all four at once, if you do it at all.

My brother Wildcatscratchfever is in alot of pain at the moment. Hope he gets better soon!

I don't have to get my top 2 because they have enough room to grow in and the doctor said that I could live with them in.

I bad a bad experience with the pain pills last night.

After about 10 minutes in my system I :puke: them out.
