futurecoach Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 This has been a topic debated by some of us on here before the season even started. So I will ask this again now, who do you all think should be the Reds starting shortstop now that Gonzo is healthy? Him or Hairston? I know most people on here have disagreed with me and ColonelCrazy about Gonzo and how we both have thought the Reds were better with someone else at shortstop besides him. So do you all still think that Gonzo is the best answer for the Reds at shortstop, after seeing how well the Reds have been doing without him? Yeah defensively Gonzo is better, however Hairston proved last year and so far this year that he is more than capable of playing short stop and making some great plays at the spot. Hairston also is a little better offensively than Gonzo and at worst the same. Except Hairston brings speed to the base paths unlike Gonzo. I know I believe the Reds are better off keeping Hairston at shortstop, so this way in LF it could be Nix or Dickerson. I think that gives the Reds the best chance to keep winning games. So what do you all think, do most of you all still believe that Gonzo helps the team out more at short, or have some of you all finally started to change your opinions about it?
LRCW Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 You were pushing Janish all along CC.:lol: I even told you that Hairston Jr. would get the majority of starts if Gonzo went down.

Actually I been pushing for anyone besides Gonzo. Before the season started I was wanting Keppy to be the main shortstop for the team and not Gonzo. I mean I have made it known on here that I am not a big Gonzo fan, and well his play has backed up me up for why I shouldn't be a Gonzo fan. I really have believed for awhile now and just not this season, that Gonzo really would not be that big of a help to this team. I just truly believe that this team is better off with him not being the regular everyday short stop. I think I remember you being a Gonzo supporter, so do you believe that the Reds are still better off with Gonzo as their starter. Or have you finally started to turn on the idea that maybe Gonzo isn't whats best for the Reds at shortstop.

AverageJoesGym Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 If Gonzalez is healthy, he's the best option at shortstop. He probably won't be available to play over 100 games, but if he's healthy he is better than Janish or Hairston. Hairston is fine as a fill in for when Gonzalez has to miss time but he's not a starter at shortstop. He's only made 40 starts there in his career, sure he's been good for a week or so but he's not any everyday starter there. He's much better being used to give guys a day off and start for a week or so when there's an injury.
ekubum Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I voted Hairston but it wasn't with any conviction at all. I think his arm could be an issue at short long term, but I based my vote on the overall quality defense/offense and I gave him the nod. Again though, no conviction on this vote at all.
saint4 Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I think Rosales should have a chance when Edwin comes back. If not, Gonzo, and Haiston can platoon in left.
LRCW Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I think Rosales should have a chance when Edwin comes back. If not, Gonzo, and Haiston can platoon in left. Huh?? You want to move Rosales to SS when Edwin comes back, and platoon Gonzo, and Hairston in LF?
SSC Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Clearly Gonzalez. I'm with you and AJG. Gonzo unless he's not healthy but he should only play 5 games a week. Hairston should play sparingly at SS, 2B, and LF. He should get any time at 2B or SS when the starter isn't available. When Hairston gets it going offensively they look good, but he shouldn't be counted on for over 100 games.
ekubum Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I think Rosales should have a chance when Edwin comes back. If not, Gonzo, and Haiston can platoon in left. I love Rosales' energy but his defense has left a lot to be desired, I would not be thrilled to see him at short if that what you meant. :idunno:
Clyde Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I'd play Hairston until he proves he's not better overall (offensively and defensively) than Gonzo.

You want to move Rosales to SS when Edwin comes back, and platoon Gonzo, and Hairston in LF? I meant if Rosales is not at SS, I think Gonzo should be there. Then Hairston can platoon with someone else in Left. I didn't make that very clear did I...
