I believe with the pieces that the Camels have in place they could do either, run or grind. With a mix of freshman/sophs and the junior and seniors this could happen. With McGovney and Skinner they can push the ball up the floor when they are in the game and the upperclassman can probably play that grind it out style a little better.

As far as McGovney goes, what a kid! He makes great grades and is one of the most talented players in the state for his age. His personality is great and does not walk around with a bloated ego. Hope some college's start taking a look at this kid. Reminds me a lot of his coach last year, Sean Maddy but with more talent. Should be an interesting season.

Great assessment and nice comparison! He will be fun to watch over the next 4 years!!!:thumb:

Just a side note on my last comment. The talent comment when it comes to McGovney comparison to Maddy was no knock on Maddy's talent. I grew up with this guy and he was a great athlete who didn't start playing organized basketball until 8th grade and even then could jump out of the gym. Just saying that McGovney is better in more areas of his game. He will have to earn his playing time behind Jolly and the other upperclassmen though. I believe Maddy is being groomed for the head coaching position in the future with CCHS or at least should be.

Agree or CC will lose a potentially great one!

It's all about district play and getting an opportunity to advance to the regional tourney. You know you are not going to be able to get out and run on Brossart. That just does not happen. So you have to be able to grind it out against Brossart and then you are going to have to be able to out run and be more athletic than Scott.

Does CC have the pieces to be able to do both of those things?

Brossart and Campbell both lost a lot of key players but both return some good players.

Why do you think Campbell County can't run against Brossart? The camels have no postman. They are an athletic bunch, and they will be very deep next year.

I think it would be to the Camels advantage to run against Brossart, with no size, a halfcourt game will be tough for the camels. I would like Coach Code to have a press for next year, it would help them in the long run.

With a much more athletic team, they should play more uptempo instead of trying to grind out every game in the 40's.

McGovney no doubt will be a good freshman player, but sounds like a lot of expectations to put on a freshman. Has he developed an outside jump shot, because a freshman typically won't be able to take it to the hoop on Juniors and Seniors?

Every year every team wants to get Brossart into a run and gun uptempo game and it never happens. Brossart is too well coached and it just goes against their DNA to play uptempo. They have a style that makes them successful almost every year. It takes two to play an uptempo game.

Its actually the other way around. He is very good at taking the ball to the hoop. He is very athletic and has long arms and he can finish very well. IMO I don't think Mcgovney is quite ready for the varsity level, he will most likely play jv and then at the end of the year play some varsity.

That is where the press comes in. I don't think you may realize the team the camels will have this year. They have to get out and run, they don't have big bodies in the paint like Ben Franzen and Petey Albrect. They are very deep and that will be good if they do press.

Still remember the night Maddy put up 39 against Pendleton and didn't play much of the fourth quarter. His little brother, Patrick Nerl scored 38 as a sophomore, good bloodlines in that family. I have heard that McGovney and Coach Maddy have a close relationship and that Nathan really enjoyed playing for Coach Maddy the past year. The kid is very unassumng and very down to earth for a kid that gets so much attention.

For a freshman, his size and athletic/basketball ability will give him starting minutes on the JV and by mid year, significant minutes on Varsity.

I remember last year when all the naysayers said he wouldn't start on the freshman team as an 8th grader and he most likely led the team in minutes played and points scored. He has developed an outside stroke and his ability to take it to the hole, IMO, is on par with juniors and seniors I've seen.

Regardless of what you think about him, he adds a breath of fresh air/hope to the program!

From what I have heard, he has been tearing up the AAU circuit as well. I will checking his team out in the next couple of weeks. Totally forgot about Nerl being Maddy's brother, thanks for reminding me. All these boys (Maddy&Nerl, McGovney) come from really good home environments. That really means a lot, most of the time.

Code is doing a great job and hopefully does not plan to leave. Where does that leave Maddy? How long can a quality coach stay at the Freshman/JV level?

That is the question!! We will have to see what developes. I think Code is a great coach but I find Maddy's brand of basketball to be more exciting. He pushes the ball up the floor.
