For today only, I will do my best to listen to any Christian suggestion.

Just listened to it. This further affirms my belief that contemporary Christian musicians are just feeding off of a ready made audience. The vocals are horrible, the arrangement is poor, and this isn't remotely music. It is the same crappy music that I heard at numerous church camps during my youth. If people want to listen to this that's fine. They should just realize that they are keeping a genre alive that wouldn't exist if not for ingenuous Christians.

 

I listen to bands like the Blind Boys of Alabama on a frequent basis so it's not that I'm against Christian themed music, I am just against bad music.

 

As far as your disdain towards rappers, Outkast has forgotten more about good music than this band ever knew.

 

P.S. After a 4th consecutive listen it hasn't gotten any better, my dog is giving me weird looks, and I can now sing the whole song. Though I do believe that sometimes the first time you hear something you don't immediately like it (as was the case with Jazz and I). I am still willing to listen to anything someone suggests as sometimes you need the right song.

I have to wonder if you have any real understanding of what it takes to be an actual musician or songwriter? Do you really understand what an arrangement actually involves?

 

Let me say this about Outkast, .... I actually have more respect for Outkast than most in the rap genre. They actually show creativity and a level of talent as opposed to just lifting a riff or track from someone else. If even 1/2 of the rap groups were along those lines as far as talent, I would never have brought up that genre at all as an example. However, to say that they have forgotten more about music than Jars Of Clay ever knew, is laughable.

 

And just for my edification, how many instruments do you play? How many songs have you written and arranged?

My definition of Christian Music is Gregorian Chant . Now that music is both beautiful and uplifting to the soul .

 

:thumb: I do feel much more grounded and calm when I have listened to nearly any Gregorian Chant.

I was still half asleep and passively watching American Idol when I posted that. I also should have injected good into this comment, "and this isn't remotely music", because technically my 3 year old nephew playing my Step Dad or Grandfathers guitar could be considered music.

There is a HUGE difference between saying someone has no talent and that you just don't like it.

 

Everyone has different styles that appeal to them. That is normal and it would be boring if we all only liked the same style or type of music. We will never all agree on what qualifies as the best music, we just know what we like or don't like. However, if you are saying that your 3 year old nephew could play this, then he is quite the talented musician at that age. Personally, I call what my 4 year old neice tries to play on one of my guitars or keyboard 'noise' because there is no sense of melody, no rhythm or timing, or not even a series of notes that blend together to create an actual piece of music. That's what music is, a series of notes either played or sung.

 

What specifically was wrong with the composition or arrangement? The composition is the actual series and order of notes that the musical piece itself contains and the arrangement is the order in which the sections of the composition are performed.

It is different, but it sounds like much of the really heavy stuff out today. They are as talented as any band going in the heavy genre. The only way you can say they aren't talented is if you don't like the really heavy stuff.

Are there any newer Gospel Quartets running around? I have most all of the Gaithers Reunion cds. I prefer the harmonizing sounds from four guys standing around a mike. Sometimes I feel like the older Gospel music is more grounded in scripture. But that may not be fair as I don't know all of this new music that you all are talking about.

 

My ipod has everything from Gospel to Rap. I have a very diverse musical loves. I also have most of the time life, I can Only Imagine cd sets.

This has been used frequently as an excuse, despite it being irrelevant to the question at hand. (Don't feel bad;you're not the first.)

 

But it's well-documented I have the same criticism for all crappy music, irrespective of genre. Bad music is bad music. Just because it sings about Jesus doesn't mean it gets an automatic pass.

While I agree that there is a more grounded scriptural base within Gospel music, you just aren't going to have the same reach and impact among others that the heavier music and even some contemporary has. I think it's pretty important to have both.

I like some pretty heavy stuff, so you have me curious. I will have to give this band a listen.

I just miss the 4 part harmony, I miss the Hymnal and singing from a book instead of a screen, I miss a half tuned piano, this just screamed worship. I also understand that a screen, powerpoint and cushened chairs scream worship in the 21st century!

Very true. Things have changed a great deal over the past 20 years in worship services. My church still uses the hymnal, we don't have cushioned seats (just the old wooden church pews). But the churches I have been to with the powerpoint screen with the lyrics are interesting. The first time I saw that at a church I thought 'Wow, what a great idea'.

My dad is the pastor of a church that has the massive LED screens and has a pretty interesting mix of hymnals and praise and worship. It really helps to incorporate the youth into the service which is so important to churches now. The church is dying on all levels, and unless we get interest back into to the younger kids, we are going to lose a generation of people. I am one of the youth who just isn't moved by hymnals, gospel, and quartets. I feel there is a lot like me. That doesn't mean it's wrong, there is just different ways to achieve the same goal.
