All In Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Is anyone not surprised by this and that it doesn't continually happen with twelve months of basketball forced down kids throats from the age of 8 by parents? His parents sounded more disappointed in the Lexington-Herald Leader article this morning than Jonathan did, (wow, big shock there). It would be hard to guage how many hours, days, etc. those kids at Elliott County had put into basketball and only basketball over the last 10 years.
All In Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 Was wondering if any of the many Elliott County or 16th region BGP posters have any more info. about this? Thanks.
nWo Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I read it also. I was taken back by the reaction of his parents.
d-dawg Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 And some people get on here and argue that there's no such thing as burn-out. Ferguson is a real talent in basketball and I have stated many times ,if there was a better 3 point shooter in the state last year than Fergoson, I sure didn't see him.

My oldest son got burned out playing baseball. He told me he had no summer. Playing school ball, in summer leagues, all star traveling teams. So when he told me he wanted to quit we supported him. My youngest son told my wife and me that he was done with basketball after he graduated from college. He had a chance to go over seas and play but said he was tired of the grind of practicing, playing and traveling.
doomer Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I read it also. I was taken back by the reaction of his parents. Of course they are disappointed they will not get to see Jonathan play basketball again, as are many of us. I am quite sure they are not disappointed in Jonathan. They have raised a fine young man capable of deciding what will make him happy. I wish him the best of luck.

All In Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 Small town athletics pressure is magnified 100%, am sure the Elliott County posters would agree, probably more parents interference also than what you would see at a Scott County or PRP. Am sure the Faulkner's are more than ready to move on to college also
jb25 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Dont know the kid personally. But WOW, how impressive is the Maturity level. The Dad is dead wrong there will be no regrets from this kid. Just the daily grind we all face of getting over the hill. This kid has it figured out.
Big Slick Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 This story is old news, this was discussed on BGP a while back. Good luck to Jonathon in the future.

Just the daily grind we all face of getting over the hill. This kid has it figured out. I wouldn't be so sure about that. When I graduated I turned down several offers to play college football and stayed close to home and went to Morehead State. My girlfriend and most of my friends were going to Morehead so I thought that was the best thing for me to do as well. I regret it everyday.
big royal daddy Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 He may have regrets later on in life, but thats for him to tell everyone later on years from now. Mom and Dad are dissapointed, especially if he has to take out loans to go to school. But he made the choice to finish on his own terms and seem content with his decision. Any athlete that can finish on his own terms and is happy about it, I say, "Way to Go". Good Luck to Johnathon on his future endeavors.
5wide Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I doubt he'll have regrets. He's not going to make a living playing basketball. I dare say it would be more beneficial to go out on top with Elliott County and focus on his education and the rest of his life. If he gets the itch to play ball, there's always an outlet for that.
