Well we had a Lil Wayne/hip hop dicussion, and I couldn't find any threads involving other types of music. So guys and gals, who are some of your favorite bands and musicians?

Rise Against is pretty much all I've been listening to lately.

I love the Mars Volta. They are pretty poor live, which is a big deal to me, but I love everyone one of their studio productions.

I thought the thread was best band or musician? Sinatra was a legend, but a musician? Did he even play an instrument?

 

Can't argue with Glenn Miller of Bennie Goodman. The Beach Boys were not great musicians, ... just good ones with nice harmonies and popular melodies.

 

Buddy Rich was one of the most amazing drummers I ever saw. Also, Omar Hakim is phenomenal on the skins. While I am not a Motley Crue fan, Tommy Lee is pretty remarkable. Neal Peart is simply da bomb. Keith Moon was so bizarre, but made very odd timed runs seem normal.

 

Andres Segovia was the father of the popular classical guitar. Chet Atkins was simply remarkable. Joe Satriani is amazing. Hendrix changed the way the electric guitar is played. Eric Johnson is one of the best guitarists alive today IMHO. Michael Hedges is simply amazing. Van Halen impacted a generation of rock guitar players. There will only be one Clapton.

 

As far as bass players, much like guitar players, there are so many. Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead was the backbone of the rhythm section and solid, John Entwistle from The Who was very underrated, Les Claypool from Primus is something else, ... strange but very talented, Tony Levin from King Crimson = phenomenal.

If you are going on just pure musicianship and talent, the Prince has to be your guy. He can play something like 15 instruments and many of them are self-taught.

 

Now skill and career success I would say that Eric Clapton is the man in that category. The man is a genius at the guitar and his life performances are a thing of beauty

Freddy Mercury (tremendous range)

George Michael (I really don't like him or his music, but he can flat out sing)

Robert Plant (the ultimate rock n roll front man in his heydey)

Sam Cooke (so smooth)

Elvis (had a very underrated range)

Brad Delp (Boston, very underrated)

Philip Bailey (Earth Wind & Fire)

Robin Zander (Cheap Trick, never got his due, but a great frontman)

Steve Perry (master of the power ballad, tremendous range)

Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free, ultimate rock n roll frontman)

Greg Lake (ELP & King Crimson, ... extremely underappreciated)
