April 10, 200917 yr Yes, but they have shown the ability to bounce back from rough outings. Homer hasn't strung together 3 good starts in a row in his entire minor league career (5 years now). And I don't know who is happy about it. As a Reds fan, I want him to be successful. Your wrong.

I may have exagerated a bit with 3 good starts in a row, but he still hasn't had much of a life down there. I have been following him religiously since 2004 (with the help of Baseball America email updates) and he has not been very impressive for years. Tons of hype and nothing to back it up. He isn't a big league pitcher in the Reds system. Why is that so wrong?

April 10, 200917 yr No Col. Sanders your wrong!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously though Homer Bailey is still young and I am sure going to the minors had a tough psychological effect on him. I would expect him to bounce back fine.

Bailey was the Reds minor league pitcher of the year for 2 years in a row. There were stretches in 2006 and 2007 where he was just dominant.

There were other pitchers in the system with comparable numbers with Baileys. But he was the #1 pick with the large contract. He needed the "mental & emotional lift" that the Minor League Pitcher of the year award in the Reds system would bring. However it hasn't helped him... i.e. the majority of his big league starts. I am just saying that most first round draft choices have made their mark in 5 years. Maybe he is a slow starter/late bloomer. Heck, we can only hope. I would love to have him pitch well in AAA. That way if and when one of our current starters in the rotation get injured there won't be a big drop off, and maybe Homer can finally live up to all the hype. Just don't get fooled by the Reds farm system giving him pitcher of the year. He has never won any national MiLB awards, nor will he the way he has pitched. :thumb:
April 10, 200917 yr I get what you are saying ebayer, he hasn't been very consistent in his career. Sure, he might of pitched three good games for Dayton or Chat., but overall he has never shown he can be a consistent pitcher, except at the A and AA level. Career #'s He is 4-8 with a career 6.78 ERA in 17 starts in the majors. Bailey's biggest problem is that he is a one trick pitcher, until he develops another (out) pitch other than a straight fastball, he will get rocked at the major league level. His pitches have no movement on them. It doesn't matter how fast you throw it if it is straight.
April 10, 200917 yr I'm constantly amazed at how fast people give up on players. You guys are wanting to give up on a kid who would be in his first year out of college and he has a whopping total of 81 innings pitched in the majors and you Theo Epsteins want to bail on him. Classic.

There's no doubt that Bailey has been over hyped by the fans and media alike. For the record he has just had two previous years at the AAA level. He pitched well in 2007 at Louisville, but was a disaster last year. From all of the reports from spring training this year, Bailey had made a complete change from his attitude and willingness to listen to others from past years. I don't think Bailey will ever end up a #1 pitcher, but I see no reason that he can't still be a solid #3, or even a 2 if he continues to mature.

April 10, 200917 yr Combined he has had double digit wins. It's kind of hard to have double digit wins when they are moving you between levels. Good point, he has 10 a couple of times combined at numerous levels, maybe that's been part of his problem.
April 10, 200917 yr He is just a kid living the dream. I believe last year was a real wake up call for the young man. EVERY starting pitcher is gonna have a rough outing. Be patient with this boy, he's learned more about baseball and being a pro in the last year than he ever had to this point. No way would I give up on him, he's 21 years old. The Reds have to wait because they have a good chunk of time & money invested.
