The "All A Classic, State Championship, or not?

Featured Replies

We have road signs and trophies and pictures on the gym wall.

They are state championships.

That's the reality for the Class A schools, at least in eastern Kentucky.

You can call it what you want in Louisville.

It's great that you celebrate winning the "All A" tournament, I really think it is.

My question is this though, is it really "All A" since we have changed the classifications in football? I don't believe there are 125 teams in A now. Is it now more accurately "All A-AA and some of AAA?"

My school here in Louisville is of no relevance on this topic anyway. We are one of the largest 6A schools in the state and we have a total of 0 state titles in basketball. In fact I am not even sure we have ever won the LIT.

My main point is, and always HAS been, if a state championship is not sanctioned by the KHSAA it is not a state title in Kentucky. As I said in regards to Trinity's club sports and so on, they are nifty badges of honor, but not true state titles.

How, logically, can a state that only awards 1 official basketball title each season have 2 different state champions?

If we are awarding "state titles" outside the purview of the KHSAA then is there any point to even having the KHSAA? Logically I would think not.

I am not saying that the All A isn't a tough tournament.

I am not saying that it isn't an accomplishment.

I am merely saying that it is NOT a state title as it is not awarded by the KHSAA.

Its a state title. Its a great event for small schools. I am glad they have it. Those boys from Shelby Valley won a state title this year in my eyes.

How and why?

The KHSAA only counts it as the winner of the Sweet 16.

Saying it is so does not make it so.

Saying it isn't doesn't make it so.

Teams from every region in the state are represented. There are more teams competing for it than in any class in football.

The Class A teams count it as a state tournament, not quite as big as the Sweet Sixteen, but still a HUGE accomplishment.

Invite 120-plus teams to the LIT and we'll compare.

It still is not a state sanctioned tournament that is legitimately recognized by the KHSAA as a state title. THAT is what doesn't make it so. Not the fact that I say it. I am arguing a point of fact here, not something I feel passionately about one way or another.

My point on the "A" thing is the fact that it is called the "ALL A Classic," the A, AA, AAA and so on designations are derivatives of the classifications of football. If you are going to call it the "All A Classic" then shouldn't it logically follow that ONLY class A teams would be involved?

The LIT is the Louisville Invitational Tournament, kind of hard to invite teams that aren't from Louisville to that tournament. Similar to inviting teams that are not "A" classification teams in football to the "All A Classic."

You are arguing about basketball and you don't know that teams from outside Louisville play in the LIT?

If the all A is a state tournament in the eyes of the beholder. Why don't we have a AA, AAA, etc. as well. Why should only the A schools get their own tournament. As mentioned above, it isn't even made up of "A" schools. Otherwise, how could a AAA football school be in the all A tournament. Maybe it needs a name change "The Little/Not so Little School Invitational"

Fabulous, this coup of basketball knowledge however does nothing to detract from the initial point.

The initial point is:

"The All A Classic is not a State Championship as it is not sanctioned as a state tournament by the KHSAA. It is a tournament in the state of Kentucky that consists of some excellent competition, but in the end is not the state championship. The only official state championship in basketball in the state of Kentucky is the one awarded to the winner of the Sweet 16."

If you want to try to hit me with a lack of basketball knowledge go right ahead. I only brought up the LIT because it was the only other Tournament of its type that I could think of off the top of my head.

My lack of basketball knowledge however does not detract from my point that the only state titles that are true state titles in Kentucky are those handed out by the KHSAA at the end of the KHSAA sanctioned playoff events.

That's just it ... the LIT isn't comparable to the All A Classic in terms of size and scope.

And let me make the point that I'm not talking about quality of play.

This debate has been hashed and rehashed so many times on this site ... I would rather not have to do it again.

Fair enough, it was just the first tourney that popped in my head. Either way neither are state titles as sanctioned by the KHSAA.

For what it's worth I think Basketball needs its own classification system as other sports have.

The "All A Classic" could then be the official tournament for all of the teams in that classification.

It's not a coup.

It's pretty basic for anyone who knows anything about high school basketball in Kentucky.

I think I have already acknowledged that football is the only sport I really give a hoot about.

I am here on account of a point of order and nothing more.

You seem to be ignoring my point though in favor of harping on basketball knowledge. My point actually has very little to do with basketball and more to do with properly acknowledging accomplishments for what they are.
