Dinkel's son pleads for reversal.

Featured Replies

She should not be allowed, plain and simple. When you make stupid decisions, you must lay in the bed you made. I feel terrible for her son and everything he has been through, but his mother is at fault for this, NOT the school or the students and families that will be in attendace. The school got burned once, and they have every right not to be burned again.

I respect the decision of Covington Catholic and the Diocese of Cov. for not allowing her to attend. I think it's the right decision. And it's their decision too since they are a "Private" school. They can do that without any consequences.

Hopefully Deters doesn't follow through with his threat of protesting the graduation at CovCath. What would that prove? I'm sure the Dinkels would not agree with the protest, since it would take away from Alex's friends day of celebration. Like the Dinkel family said in the preess conference, it's been over two years since this has happened, so lets just "move on and put this behind us". Well to that I say Amen! Move on.

School is in the right here I don't want someone that rapes a child anywhere near a school ever, and she hasn't necessarily served her punishment part of our law says the punishment are things like staying away from school's for these crimes.

Why? I'd let the father attend if it happened to him.

"It" didn't "happen" to her. She sought it out, and she's getting what she deserves in the legal sense.

It is my understanding she asked only to sit in the very back row of the auditorium and only at the end when certificates were passed out. Seriously, what harm could this do? Will it really ruin the ceremony or anyone else's evening? I see this situation as being far more about her son than her. HE is the one being harmed by this decision. He's been through enough in his life. Let him have his mother there to see his hard work honored.

You're right, this is about more than her son. It is about all of the seniors. Obviously Alex Dinkel is a big part of that class, though.

I'd imagine that Eric Deters will follow through. I don't think that the Dinkel family will want him to, though; however, Eric Deters is not your typical guy (or attorney), to put it lightly.

FWIW, I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's such a sad story. I feel horrible for Alex. I've followed his story & prayed for him each step along the way. It's a blessing that he's come this far & I'm proud of him. It saddens me to know that his mother won't be able to be there, but I respect the decision made by the administration at Covington Catholic. They're not in an enviable position.

I don't know if it would cause a problem or not. There are lots of parents there, as well as kids who have been affected by Dinkel's actions over the years. Like I said, I'm undecided on what I would do, and am glad that I'm not the one making the decision.

Something else I'd like to add is that Alex is part of the class that was affected by this. A lot of the kids that were involved are in this class, or are friends with kids who were.

It is not right to allow her to come and compromise how some may feel about it, when she was the one in the wrong in the first place. CovCath admin made a tough decision and they should stand by it as it was the correct one.

Well said!

Jesus would show compassion to a woman who raped a boy? Forgive yes, but show compassion and sympathize for her? Also, would Jesus protest the graduation if Dinkel isn't allowed to go, and taking away a joyous day for all the other graduates, like Deter's said they might do?

Give me a break !!! Do you really think she raped him? Im sorry but in this case it just doesnt fly. Rape to me is forcably holding someone down and violating them and there is no way that petite lady did that.

At the end of the day lets all use common sense here and realize the situation at hand.

Do I think CovCAth is in the right here to deny her? Yes.

I think she made a horrible decision and has paid her price. Whether that price was the right one that is another story but she served her time.

Even if the girl no longer attended the school, and the man had done his time? That's a stretch, however just for the sake of it, was it statutory rape that she was convicted of?

I don't think it is right but our society seems to be easier on women who are convicted of statuatory rape than men who are convicted of the same crime. BTW somehow I never heard of this until a day or two ago. I feel bad for the son but I think this was a no brainer for Cov Cath adm.

You are taught when you are a kid, your actions have consequences and those consequences may not be limited to just you but your family. She is re-learning that lesson.

Come off it. That kid was not violently attacked by her. He was 16 years old and knew right from wrong. He made a decision just as she did. She should be able to go to the graduation. She'll be judged by everyone there and made to feel very uncomfortable, like she should be. However, why take away from her son's day? If it was my graduation, and I'm going back 10 years here, I wouldn't have cared if she was there or not. If it made a friend of mine feel better b/c his Mom was allowed to come, then I would be all for it. I wouldn't care how uncomfortable it made my grandma to have that woman there. It should be what is best for the kids graduating.

For the record and without commenting on the decision itself, the decision was made by both the school and the Diocese. The Diocese may be driving this one.

If she doesn't get to attend the graduation, I think Cov. Cath. should return all the tuition money that she signed checks for over the years.

(heard this from a buddie and thought it was an interesting thought)

I believe she should be allowed to attend. If other parents and family are distracted by her presence, then maybe they should focus more on their graduate. She has done what is required of her by law and this is a unusual circumstance. She was convicted of raping a 15 year old boy. I think back and wonder where she was at when I was 15. Does that make it right? NO not at all, but anyone who has been a 15 year old boy knows what I mean.

That was a great thought by your friend.

WHAT!!! You usually make sense in your posts but you're way off on this one. I'm glad your definition of rape isn't what's used for the legal definition.

Look it up:

Rape: unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent.

It's not always about physical force. She is a mother who gave her son's friends alcohol and had sex with at least one of them. I know he was a 15 yr old boy and apparently the guys on here think he was loving every minute of it. Maybe he was but he was under the legal age of consent. How young would the boy have to be before the adult is seen as a sexual predator?

Yes, it's too bad for the son. She should have considered the consequences before she jumped into bed with a 15 yr old boy.
