Because it is Louisville, Denny Crum and Rick Pitino they belong in the discussion.

Then you need to say 2000 rather than 1990.

for a 20 year body of work UL is not in that discussion except as a very lower tier. Crum and UL basketball was a ghost in the 90's and even since Pitino's arrival there is one Final Four and one elite eight place in this decade. UK almost matches that with 3 Elite Eight appearances and 2 overall #1 seeds but if the cutoff was 2000 I wouldn't include them in this discussion.

When evaluating the nation's top jobs, I don't think the amount of success in specific time periods should be used as one of the top criteria.

Louisville was "a ghost in the 90s" because Crum got complacent and lost his edge. Pitino has restored Louisville to its place as one of the nation's top 10 or top 15 programs.

#2 Kentucky basketball coach

Much like all Alabama football coaches after Bear Bryant, UK basketball coaches are judged by the standards set by Adolph Rupp, who won 876 games and four national titles in 42 years with the Wildcats. It's much harder to win consistently these days, but don't try telling that to Kentucky fans. Only Rick Pitino (pictured) has truly made them happy, but he's now coaching across the state in Louisville, which only makes things tougher. Just ask Tubby Smith and Billy Gillispie.

I can live with that but the "body of work" from 1990 does not rank there. The body of work in the last 10 and especially 5 years does.

So UL is not a top tier job? I think a lot of coaches in America would disagree with that.

I think our mix up might lie in Post # 15

#1 or #2 program through history.

How many kids, outside of KY, know or care about the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and most of the 80's. I would think top 10 since 92. Again, it seems that the only school allowed to trumpet their storied past is UK. Any other school brings it up its the past. If UK brings it up its part of the program.

How would you rank schools from 1990 to 2009?

I would say Louisville is a top tier Coaching job now, but not based on some ranking that would include the above dates. :thumb:

This was asked different ways in the previous post. I think there are 6 schools traditon wise separate themselves from the pack. UCLA, UK, UNC, Duke, Kansas, and Indiana.

If we are talking today, Indiana is not even mentioned but if Tom Crean leaves Marquette to go there then it is still a top job. Just because a team has a bad few years they don't drop off the map as a top job. You have to take in consideration what they have done over different eras when you talk about top jobs. UK was terrible at the end of sutton's era but was still considered a top job.

there are several teams that are in different levels when it comes to the top jobs in America. UL is right below those top 6.

Yeah, but does tradition necessarily make those the top six jobs in this day and age?

I still think it gives them an edge.

How much pub was the Virginia job getting? It is an ACC school, a top conference.

UK still pulls the media just the other 5 that I mentioned. They are known for basketball and will always be.

1 elite 8? Try 3 elite 8's..... in the last 5 years.

You are willing to put Oklahoma in the discussion, but not UofL?

I agree with most you say, and I would not put them in the discussion of top programs over the last 20 years. They are probably top ten "all time", and have been pretty good this decade. The late 90's killed them though.

But Oklahoma.....:ohbrother: I think Syracuse is a stretch too.
