NY Times: "UK fans are delusional"

So only in Kentucky could a story come out confirming that John Calipari has agreed to a contract to become the Wildcats’ next head coach and manage to include a quote about an “automatic” trip to the Final Four next season. We can’t even say that the ink hasn’t dried on Calipari’s contract with Kentucky, because he hasn’t even signed it yet.

Scribe, judging by your avatar I wouldn't have you pegged as UK fan? Is that right?

While I agree that Wildcat fans are often quite delusional, the quote was from the father of a recruit. I can't really hang this one on the fans (for once :D ).

Guessing even Kentucky Basketball had a better year than the New York Times?? :D

I root for UK. Grew up listening to Cawood and kept a scrapbook from their 1978 championship season. I have more UK clothing than any other college and watch them on the tube more than any other college. But it's been hard to remain a UK fan in the past decade because of the fan base. It was funny listening to people call into the coach's show and ask if Richie Farmer was going pro. Until you realized they were serious. Fans who didn't want Calipari here two years ago suddenly think he is the second coming of Roy Williams. Fans who were on the BCG bandwagon in 2007 were among the first to call for his outster in 2009. It's hard to remain a fan when you have to wade through the nonsense on here from people who claim to be UK fans. I'm not questioning their allegiance. Just their practicality of the situation.

UK fans couldn't wait to get rid of Tubby because he couldn't recruit among other things. UK fans hailed Gillispie and his recruiting prowess. Yet when you go back through the recruiting threads and read them, it seems like BCG whiffed on a lot of recruits that had UK among their top 3-5 teams.

Orten and possibly Patterson are the only two big-time recruits BCG landed, although many feel Patterson would have played for Tubby had he stayed in Lexington.

He landed another Jared Carter in Dakota Euton and others who STILL aren't among the tops in their classes. But that's what UK wanted.

There were people on here in November and December claiming this was a Final Four team. Simply laughable.

It's the same way being a fan of the Cubs. The delusional ones make it tough to respect the legitimate ones.

My brother in Dallas says people in Texas are laughing their tales off at how the Gillispie/UK situation played out. A big fat "I told you so." They say UK fans got what they deserve.

Of course, no one in Kentucky thinks that because the fans are too busy wearing the blue and white glasses.

As far as the avatar goes, maybe it should have been a picture of people piling on a big pile. Today's UK fans have gotten good at that. I simply chose the bandwagon since Uk is close to hiring a coach that two years ago, nobody on here wanted.

Apparently, there is still plenty of room on the bandwagon.

I honestly kinda think that Larry Orton's claims wouldn't be to far off...call me delusional too lol.

Well, they actually have to get on a court together and mesh, so you might not want to go cutting any nets down just yet.

Definitely true...but if that team which he described was a reality then I don't think he is delusional.

And besides I wouldn't cut down the nets until I won the NCAA championship...I think you should only cut down one net a year...just my opinion.

First off, I wasn't on here two years ago, or I would have stuck up Coach Calipari. I was a big Tubby supporter, of course he didn't get the best recruits in the country-not even Tayshaun was highly rated. He had the dynamite Rondo, Morris, Crawford and Bradley class, but you saw how that worked out. I think he whiffed tremendously on Carter and Euton, and could have done better to recruit Chris Lofton, AJ Slaughter, and Stephon Pettigrew as all have/had decent (in Lofton's case, Great) collegiate careers at their respective schools. I also think he would have done better to pursue Tasmin Mitchell, Brandan Wright, Brandon Rush and Tyler Hansbrough more thorougly than he did. But every coach has draw backs, Tubby's greatest strengths were getting his players to buy into and play hard for him and enjoyed a good-great career at Kentucky. I was never a supporter of Billy Clyde's, I'm not saying I didn't root for him and hope he did well, but he was not my first choice, Calipari was and has been for the past two years. I'm too young to really appreciate the Pitino years, but from what I've seen of him at Louisville, I think that Calipari can bring Kentucky back to and maybe even be better than Pitino was.

So no disrespect intended, but I am not one of those fans on the bandwagon. I am originally from Florida and am a big time UF Football fan even when I moved to Kentucky in 2000, right around the time Billy Donovan was bringing the Florida Basketball program to National Prominence. I was 12 then and was just then beginning to follow sports in the religious fashion I still do today. I've been a Kentucky fan during Tubby's days, BCG's days and I'll be a Kentucky basketball fan until the day I die. Regardless of whether Cal is or isn't the next UK Basketball coach, I'll still go to Midnight Madness and as many games as possible and wear my closet full of Kentucky Basketball shirts with Pride.
