Grizzly33 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Boone might be the obvious choice but who knows? What other teams can prevent them from leaving the region? Why? What do they have to do? Can anyone touch them with the amount of talent they return?
9thregionbb Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Highlands also has a good team coming back next year.
Reality Check Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I would say the best shot would be Highlands or Boone. Holmes just creates a match up nightmare for any team. The 9th has enjoyed watching the Johnson brothers and Pittman play but I am sure they will not be sad to watch them move on to the college level! I would say barring anything crazy the Bulldogs will make it out of the 9th next year and contend once again for a state title.
Big Game Player Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Isn't Clark County going to be good enough to compete at this level next year? I think Its Clark I am talking about?
kywldcat01 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Highlands will be Holmes' biggest threat next year. Considering what they accomplished this year without any seniors, I don't see how anyone could think otherwise. Boone will be good again, but not as good as they were this year. Losing Mcfarland, Brown, and Spaulding really hurts. Conner, Ryle, Newcath, and Dixie all return some solid players and should make it tough on Holmes to get out of the region, but at the end of the day, I just don't see how anyone in the 9th can keep them from repeating. Too much talent and experience for them. On a side note, when was the last time a team went 32-2 over a two year span against 9th region competition? That's unreal.
westsider Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Who can stop Holmes from making it back to the Sweet 16? Uh ... Holmes, most likely. A lot depends on whether this team comes back intact. If Pittman ends up at a prep school, the Bulldogs are a little more vulnerable.

Grizzly33 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 I think if you can physically D up Holmes (very hard to do but happened this year a couple times at least, not all in Bulldogs losses), grind it out, and hope for offensive breakdowns, you have a chance. I think Highlands and Boone can both do this next year and I think the departure of PG Riley will be a huge factor. I think the Bulldog offense becomes a good deal more unstable without Riley standing in there. Highlands style fits into the equation of a hardnosed defensive minded team that could take Holmes to the wire. Shots would have to fall big time too though. As evident in the Region championship, Holmes will score against less talented NKY teams, but pace and physicality could play a huge role. (Also see competitive games with Ryle and Simon Kenton, two opponents with large deficits in athleticism when compared with Holmes.)

If Boone can find a replacement for McFarland, they will do well. They need to replace his rebounding and interior passing. Spaulding was a good reserve. Brown did well at the end of the year, but Boone was also doing well before those two football players came out. They will have very good returning seniors in Earls, Gabbard, Popp, and Cotton, as well as 5 other seniors and some good juniors-to-be coming up. Boone should have one of the best backcourts next year. The question is whether they will find enough rebounding and interior play.

But it's tough to replace a player like Mcfarland. You don't lose a player of his caliber and just replace him with someone else. I've also heard that Popp may elect to transfer out? Any truth to that?
