I haven't had a chance to follow Beechwood in the last couple of years as I usually have. Are they playing as much "iron man" football these? In the Yeagle years, he'd sometimes have 7 or 8 guys going both ways. I know their depth charts are somewhat limited in numbers, so I would assume that is Coach Rash's gameplan as well.

 

Also, given that Beechwood seems to be a little more built for speed rather than size. How do you think that is going to match up in the first few weeks of their season since they're going to be jumping in for the time being with the "bigger" programs?

 

There will probably be at least 7 or 8 going both ways again this year.

 

As to size vs speed, actually Beechwood has been a size/power team the last few years. Their offensive lines the past few years have been big. Last year they pretty much lined up and played smash mouth all day long regardless of the opponent. This year, the line is smaller so it will likely be a different team offensively built around speed, misdirection and maybe even more passing.

Rash needs to try to build a little depth. Too many standing around watching during practices. With playing such a brutal schedule early I seriously doubt the 7 or 8 you mention will be able to withstand the beatings week-after-week by the big schools.

I don't doubt their abilities or desires to play tough...I just question whether Beechwood can hang in that many games with teams larger (in size and number) than theirs, and stay injury free and fresh enough to put forth what they need to among their 1A competitors.

 

I don't have any doubts as to whether or not they'll make the playoffs, obviously, I'm just kind of wondering if they will be able to put up the record that they want to when they get to their actual district play, and then bring a full team of starters through to the playoffs.

Depth is a very difficult thing to develop at a 1A school, especially with an 8 man senior class. As to standing around at practices, I don't see much of that happening. I think I trust that Rash knows what he is doing and has a pretty good handle on how to run a practice.

The schedule early will be brutal and will toughen the team for the playoffs, they will be able to get healthy through district play and then have a nice toughener against NCC before the playoffs start. This team may have 3 or 4 losses this year but they will be ready to defend the title at playoff time.

VOR, I have come to believe that most people just don't understand 1A football, or the draw of it. I personally think 1A is the funnest class to watch, but most would disagree with me, and most just don't get it.

True, 1A is different, especially when it comes to team depth. Every 1A team calls on players to go both ways and I would guess all have at 5 or 6 or more players going both ways. That is just the way it is when you have fewer bodies to pull from.
