I just wonder what is the largest (enrollment) school in the 15 and 16 regions!

 

Johnson Central in the 15th but the 16th is harder to call without research. Population decline in Boyd County has been drastic for some time.

When you look at the enrollment sizes, here is what each "small" school must overcome to advance to Rupp Arena. I'd say the eastern KY schools like Hazard wouldn't have the success they enjoy if they played elsewhere and had to consistantly get past the bigger schools.

So how much longer before the reality of economics in today's economy sets in and forces consolidation to happen in the 15 and 16 Regions?

 

Note: Actually there is only 1 5A school in the ninth, Dixie! Highlands is a 3A school playing up to 5A, CovCath is a 4A school playing up to 5A and Holmes has been moved to 4A. Scott plays in the 8th region and Cooper will be playing in 6A next season.....

I thought about the teams that played up after I posted it. They still have four "big" schools, which is equal to regions 14-16 combined.

This is a great illustration of why Kentucky's Sweet Sixteen is the greatest state basketball championship in the country. Only one state champion and where size of school does not have a lot of bearing!

 

I am surprised that other states don't copy Kentucky's system. It is the best.

 

And with all the success the Sweet Sixteen format has had in basketball, it surprises me that the same governing body elected to add more classes to its football championships in the past couple of years.

It's also one of the reasons why the eastern part of the state are among the most vocal against class basketball because they still have a legitimate shot at the Sweet 16 each year while smaller schools in the Third Region and metro Louisville and LExington areas do not.

I am totally for the sweet sixteen and the one class winner, but is it really one man one vote. Let me explain: and remember we are just what ifing......

 

What would be the total enrollment of the ninth region compared to the total enrollment of the sixteenth region? I mean I am sure that maybe the number of schools are close to the same number (19=9th 16=16th) but what about the number of students from one region to another. Meaning that a student in the 16th (percentage wise) has a much greater chance of playing in the sweet sixteen than a student playing in the ninth. What if the total enrollment of each Region had to be as close as possible like our Congressional voting districts are?

Because the thread didn't mention Elliott County in the title and didn't mention them outside the first post until post #6. Could that be it?

Do any of these small schools have impact players that have enrolled in their school in the last 4 years from another school district??

Pretty amazing a school the size of Hazard can have such success in both basketball and football like they do.

 

Good point. It's a lot easier to accomplish in basketball, where one really talented class can make a nice run for a couple of years; but it's much tougher in football where it takes so many more players to field a team.

I like this thread, it shows everyone in the state of Kentucky and the Country(if they look at this website) that our state tournament is the best. In many states they have 5 state champs, 1 for every division. I believe that more states should look at Kentucky's Basketball Tournament and realize that this is the true way to do it. In other sports the size of a school really matters, but in basketball anyone can beat anyone! Look at the conference tournamnets to see that! Personally I would like to see Elliot County becuase I had the chance to see this team play and i think they use everyone on the team. On the other hand, they did draw the toughest side of the bracket! If you look at the state tournament bracket anyone can see that this may be one of the best weeks at rupp since the days of lofton or the 1998 year when Paintsville played Scott County in the Championship game!
