However, my point concerning the Ballard game was a lot of people on BGP said that Ballard would come into Sandy Hook and "run Elliott County out of their own gym." My point was that it didn't happen even though people talked about how much better Ballard was than EC.

Half of them...Eastern, Corbin, Lex Cath, Mason Co., Shelby Valley, Anderson Co., Holmes and Elliott County.

 

I'm not doubting Holmes defensive abilities against any other team in the state. I'm just not sure they can stop Elliott County's shooters.

 

Just looking at the potential match ups IF these two meet, I think EC will have a tougher time shooting from the perimeter than some realize:

A good defense will cause you not to shoot well. Holmes is the best defense going right now. (held their last 5 opponents to 33 on average) Pretty impressive.

 

Just throwing this out because I know that Obie1 was at the NC/Holmes game last week and can probably attest to this as well... I personally watched Conner, who is as good if not the best shooter as there is in the entire region, make 10 for 10 on 3's in warmups and then hit his first 2 in the game. Holmes took notice and he didn't make another the rest of the game I don't believe. And that was with a big guy drawing double teams inside. Just saying because it showed that Holmes adjusted to good shooters....

I agree completely, Holmes is longer than any team in the state and that length frustrates a shooter to no end.

I don't recall many, if any, saying Ballard was that much better. I do recall people saying that they'd be able to run with EC though which they obviously didn't do too bad considering they scored 72. EC was just too much for them in their home gym and proved they were the better team. Ballard is a fairly small team which is the reason they try to get out and run.

Nice list Mr. Jones. This one actually looks realistic. I personally would have Holmes ahead at #1, but have no problem with the way you have ALL of the teams listed as I think it could play out that way. :thumb:

Correct...Conner and Pangallo both made their first two 3 pointers and neither made another 3 the rest of the game. They finished with 7 for the game, and I'm pretty sure 5 came in the first half.

Depending on which Christain County team that shows up the tourney can chage quickly if Holmes goes down. If Christain County can get past Holmes (will be hard) they can do what many think Holmes could do! Size will be the only thing that bothers Christain County but, our 1985 Hopkinsville team had a 6'3" Center (Lamont Ware) and we took it to seven footers on down and couldn't be stopped! Should be a good tourney and I wish all the teams and the young men who made it this far the best of luck! There will only be one Champion but there aren't any loser in this group of teams that make up this year's tourney!

These teams can play with anyone, saw all of them this year. All would be in top 10 in State.

And averaged scoring around 42, and that just won't get 'r done in Lex, IMO.

1. Holmes (32-2) - Last year's state runner-up, they allow 46 ppg and are winning by almost 14. They've avenged both of their losses. 1-0 vs. the field

 

2. Eastern (30-2) - Average 70 ppg, win by 16 per game. 1-0 vs. the field

 

3. Shelby Valley (30-4) - Average 74 ppg and win by 22+ on average. Only one in-state loss (vs. Knott Central on 12/21). 1-0 vs. the field (55-52 over Elliott Co.).

 

4. Elliott County (30-2) - They average almost 86 ppg and they're winning by 26+ on average. 2-1 vs. the field. What scares me? On neutral courts they lost to Shelby Valley (52-55) and squeaked by Anderson Co. (76-72).

 

5. Lexington Catholic (25-7) - Average 71 ppg, win by 9 per game. 1-2 vs. the field (all games on the road).

 

6. Mason County (24-6) - Allowing under 49 ppg and win by 17 per game. 0-2 vs. the field (vs. Lex. Cath, @ Elliott Co.)

 

7. Corbin (29-3) - Average 74 ppg, win by 22+. 1-0 vs. the field

 

8. Christian County (21-6) - Average 76+ ppg and win by 11 per. Haven't played anyone in the Sweet 16.

 

9. Anderson County (24-5) - Allowing under 49 ppg and win by almost 14 per game. 0-1 vs. the field (neutral court loss to Elliot Co., 72-76)

 

10. Bowling Green (26-6) - 63+ ppg. 1-0 vs. the field (Grayson Co.)

 

11. West Jessamine (26-8) - 67 ppg. 1-0 vs. the field (Lex. Cath.)

 

12. Adair County (26-7) - Allow just under 51 ppg. 1-0 vs. the field (Central)

 

13. Hazard (26-8) - Allow under 47 ppg and win by 14+ per game. 20-4 in 2009. 0-1 vs. the field (@ Holmes)

 

14. Central (16-14) - Lost their first 8 games. 16-6 in 2009. 0-2 vs. the field (Eastern, Adair Co.)

 

15. Grayson County (25-6) - Allowing under 50 ppg and win by 13 per game. 0-1 vs. the field (Bowling Green, 59-72)

 

16. Graves County (23-9) - Allow 50 ppg. No games vs. Sweet 16 participants.

I'm beginning to wonder why anyone besides Holmes and Elliott County are making the trip to Lexington.

 

From what I can gather, we have the unstoppable force (Elliott County) and the immovable object (Holmes). One cannot be stopped, running teams ragged and scoring at will. And the other, well, you're lucky if they let you breathe, much less score.

 

I say we petition the KHSAA to go the BCS format, so we can get these two on the court to settle the matter and save the rest of the participants the embarassment of having to face them.

 

Would it be too much for either side to concede that both are great teams that play contrasting styles and are capable of beating anyone they play? And, that there are a few other teams in the tournament that are capable of doing the same thing?

5wide--Agree 100%. Everyone in the tournament has a legitimate shot at winning the championship or they wouldn't be in the Sweet 16 to begin with.

 

I can concede that both Holmes and Elliot are great teams with their own styles of play and either team could very well be the next state champion.

Do you really think teams in Lex. are going to slow the ball down as much as 9th region teams did in the region tourney?

 

BTW, that 42 average would have been enough to beat high scoring Ballard...Holmes held them to 41 points.

 

I think some may be looking too much at their average ppg during the region tourney. When they play teams who want to get out and run and score, they put up big numbers. They've put 70 or more on Scott Co, Bryan Station, Franklin County, Tates Creek, and Seneca...all of whom were in the BGP top 20 at some point during the year, with Seneca being the only team who didn't finish in the BGP top 20.

 

If teams don't try to slow the ball down against Holmes in Lex, you'll see them put some points up on the board.
