Florida State Put On Probation; Will Forfeit Wins

Football coach Bobby Bowden would have entered the coming season with 382 career victories, trailing Penn State coach Joe Paterno by one win on the all-time list. The sanctions will force him to forfeit all wins during which ineligible students competed in 2006 and 2007.

FSU went 7-6 both of those years, so could lose up to 14 wins, and end up 15 wins behind Joe Paterno, which would all but give him the all-time record for good.

Unless Paterno dies in the next year or so, while Bowden stays healthy.

Wow. 2 scholly's this year, 3 next and one after that. NCAA really came down with a sledgehammer on this one.

Maybe these two will finally retire now that there is some real separation between them on the W's list.

Bowden will not retire. He will stay around until he rights the ship. They will be very solid next season. But still one more year away from bing a top team.

Haven't we been hearing this "one more year" stuff from Florida State for a few years now? They haven't been bad, but I'm not sure they get back to the old Florida State with Bowden in charge. Just my opinion.

Hope not. At least not for a while, anyway. :D

Only person saying one more year is the media. As a FSU fan I can tell you they have some very good young talent. They are close to getting back.

Well that stinks. I love Bowden, not FSU but I like what he has done and been to FSU and the game of college football. I really wanted both of them to go out in a tie, in a perfect world. I really would have to flip a coin to decide my favorite.

All I can do is smile right now.

Been hearing this ever since they declined...the 'Noles haven't been lacking talent. They bring in top flight recruiting classes every year. That hasn't changed. According to rivals...

2009 - #7 Overall (2 5-stars, 10 4-stars)

2008 - #9 Overall (2 5-stars, 13 4-stars)

2007 - #21 Overall (7 4-stars)

2006 - #3 Overall (2 5-stars, 18 4-stars)

2005 - #2 Overall (3 5-stars, 13 4-stars)

2004 - #3 Overall (1 5-star, 16 4-stars)

2003 - #21 Overall (1 5-star, 8 4-stars)

2002 - #4 Overall (6 5-stars, 14 4-stars)

In the last eight years, their average class ranking is 8.75. 17 5-star and 99 4-star recruits during that span.

Just for comparison's sake, in that same span, here is how USC, Florida and his old buddy Paterno rate.

Southern Cal - 4.13 Overall, 31 5-stars, 91 4-stars

Florida - 7.5 Overall, 18 5-stars, 98 4-stars

Penn State - 31.5 Overall, 5 5-stars, 52 4-stars

Lack of talent is not an excuse for Florida State and their struggles. I'm with gchs on this one. Something else needs to change in Tallahassee. And, it's not the talent level.

2000 11-2 Orange Bowl

2001 8-4 Gator Bowl

2002 9-5 Sugar Bowl

2003 10-3 Orange Bowl

2004 9-3 Gator Bowl

2005 8-5 Orange Bowl

2006 7-6 Emerald Bowl

2007 7-6 Music City Bowl

2008 9-4 Champs Sports Bowl

IMO only the 05- 07 did the team struggle. Bowden made the change he needed on offense to right the ship. Last season they started to get things going. Next season Will be back in a BCS game.

The decline talent level has been at the QB position. The have lack depth on the o-line, this was the first season since 2004 they haven't had major injuries on the o-line.

Trust me no changes needed at the Head Coach spot.

Those are some good stats on the recruits but comparing FSU's stars to USC's stars is apples and oranges because for some reason FSU 4-5 stars are jailbait, whereas USC's 4-5 stars turn into NFL material by their soph. season. The kids talent level may be equal but not their decision making, IMO. Bowden is the right man for the job.

I guess the rest of the schools should send FSU a thank you card for recruiting all the "bad apples" so they won't have to deal with any of them. :idunno:

Come on. That's a weak argument.

The fact is, FSU has recruited better than 90% of the schools in the nation and they can't get the results on the field. You can say what you want about their decision-making, but the staff is responsible for 1) who they recruit, 2) keeping discipline on the roster, and 3) developing the talent they get.

Changes need to be made...whether that means changing the way things are done, changing head coaches or assistants, I don't know. Bowden may or may not be the man for the job. But, the talent level isn't the problem. It never has been.

It is just reality, their talent level that you speak of may or may not reach the field that those rankings do not illustrate. I agree with about everything you say, however, I don't feel you can base a programs success based on rankings alone from their recruiting class.

Absolutely, that is true. It takes a staff, discipline, etc. CoachBuckett said they had some good young talent and things were ready to turn. I simply showed that the recruiting for FSU has consistently been in the top 10, meaning the talent is there to do much better than 7-6 in one of the weakest BCS conferences.

So, why now? What is different? Why will FSU suddenly return to glory with this young talent when they haven't been able to do it with good talent over the past several year?

I'm not buying it.
