Alright folks, here is an Elliott County basketball story written by yours truly. It is a true story. I hope you enjoy :thumb:

 

A Special Team Through the Eyes of an In-Law

 

I would like to thank Pat Forde at ESPN for his article “Daring to Dream” that found it’s way to the homepage of ESPN.com. That article left me with tear-filled eyes and that “hair standing up feeling” for about ten minutes yesterday afternoon. You know, the kind of feeling you had when Rudy finally ran onto the field at the end of that Notre Dame game. Then, just when you thought you couldn’t feel any more emotions, Rudy picked up a sack and was carried off the field. That’s the feeling you succumb to when you witness something special - something special that was earned through giving it your all. That’s the feeling I had yesterday afternoon when I saw three of the Elliott County kids gracing the cover of the ESPN website.

 

It felt nice a few weeks ago when the Lions had a front-page article in the Lexington Herald Leader. Likewise, I smiled when they had a feature in the Louisville Courier Journal. I was similarly impressed when they picked up an early-season mention in USA Today following their showing at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach. On the other end of the spectrum, I was upset just two days ago when I discovered a not-so-pleasant editorial in the aforementioned Courier Journal. My good feeling returned, however, after I read the rebuttal from Elliott County’s own Rocky Adkins, a Kentucky State Representative and former Lion. Then, my emotions peeked when I saw Jonathan Ferguson, Ethan Faulkner and Evan Faulkner in the ESPN window where I normally see Tiger Woods, LeBron James or Peyton Manning.

 

It was nearly a decade ago that I was working on an undergraduate degree at Morehead State University. I discovered pretty quickly that adult life was rather difficult without money, so I was a full-time student that was working nights at the Morehead Shoney’s Restaurant. I remember vividly coming in one afternoon for the 5-10 shift. I clocked in as usual and assumed my position on the “cook’s line.” Almost immediately, a new waitress caught my eye. Now, I had seen my fair share of waitresses during my two-year tenure at the restaurant but this one was different. She struck me as the most beautiful thing I had ever seen model those black pants and maroon, collared-shirts. Believe it or not, that 5-10 shift introduced me to my new girlfriend and my future wife.

 

So, how do my days as a restaurant worker tie into Elliott County basketball?

To me, that moment was as special as any I've see in a basketball arena. It was as if everyone in the arena rose together and gave a standing ovation. I came darn near crying in front of a bunch of strangers :lol:

I have a somewhat "unique" perspective of the Elliot County boys, especially what I refer to as the ""F" troop. Faulkner, Faulkner, and Ferguson. I have coached against them, and I have had the unique pleasure of actually coaching them this summer against some of the best players in the country. Looking back on it, on paper, they won some games they had no business winning, but they and their teammates did win, (in spite of the coaching) I guess because they didn't know any better. I talked to a college coach that said he liked Kentucky players because they were often just "tougher" than kids from other states. These kids embody that "toughness" he was talking about. People are not drawn to them because of their overwhelming athletic ability.They are drawn to them because of their overwhelming ability to overachieve. To overcome the odds no matter what they go up against, and I have never seen them

get "beat" , I have only seen them "run out of time". When this season is over, they will indeed go down as "unforgettables". And I totally understand

why Coach Mays will tell you he was a lucky man to get to coach this bunch of kids. I feel the same way about the short summer we spent together along with 6 other guys who just left it on the floor almost every time out.

These guys are just WINNERS! No matter what the scoreboard ends up saying.
