I think just the kids adjusting to a first year staff and new approach. I expect that Garrard, though young this year, will compete hard. The attitude seems to be much more positive then before Scenters took over and that is a huge step in the right direction.

 

The biggest improvement I saw was in the offense. They scored 21.8 ppg in 2007 & improved by nearly 10 ppg scoring 31.3 ppg in 2008. The defense went from giving up 28.2 ppg in 2007 to 33.6 in 2008, but a big part of that was from 3 games vs Bell County (50) the 4A State Champs, Taylor Co (65) who scored 480 pts last season and Frankfort (54) who scored 500 pts last season. The final game against Breathitt (state 3A runner up) in the 3A playoffs, Garrard lost 28-13 and Breathitt averaged over 32 ppg in the playoffs and 34.7 ppg for the entire season.

 

That is a young team getting older. The stats are going to look better each year. Should be better this year.

I can't speak for 1977, but I will check back. Hatz might be a better choice for that. He was playing for Boyle against Garrard around that time.

 

In 1986 to the best of my memory, they had maroon (cardinal, whatever) color helmets with yellow numbers on each side and a yellow stripe down the middle. The numbers were wider than those on the side of Alabama's helmets; I don't exactly know who to compare them with today. They also had yellow facemasks.

 

In 1995 and 1996, they were very simple. Solid maroon helmets with a yellow facemask. No decals of any kind.

All of that is true. The numbers are around 50 this year, with something like 22 freshmen. The freshman class has had a great deal of success at the middle school. They have very good size with some skill. The development of the skill kids in the coming years will go a long way toward determining how successful they will be at the high school.

 

As for this season, line play could be a question mark. There are a couple youngsters who may have to play quite a bit. It might make for some tough times in the opening weeks, but I think they will be solid by October.

Garrard got an absolute STEAL when they hired Mark Scenters. He was passed over by other schools when he was an assistant and he will prove to be one of the better head coaches in the area given some time. Classy guy, great coach!

How much time did Coach Scenters spend at Central before coming to Garrard? Was he ever at Southern as a coach? Anywhere else? Just curious.

I can't remember for sure but I think he was there, at least 5 years. I know he was there the years my nephew played at Central. He didn't coach at Southern but I think that is where he went to high school.

 

If any of my grandson's ever play football I wouldn't mind one bit if Coach Scenters was their coach.

I remember Garrard, Southern, and Lincoln were all looking for coaches at around the same time. The same names kept coming up for all three jobs. Ultimately I think all three made good hires, but I think most in Lancaster are very happy with the choice Garrard made.

Mark started coaching the Berea Community Middle School team with a few fellows that I played with. He invited me to come down and help but my work schedule wouldn't allow me too. I worked with him at a factory a few years before he went back to school at Eastern to get his degree. He was a nice kid and I could see his enthusiasm for football back then. I agree with the quote earlier from nWo...I'd have been glad to have had him coach my boys if things had worked out that way. Go get 'em Mark!!

Last night was 'Meet the Lions' night at Garrard County High School. All players from all fall sports teams were introduced (soccer, volleyball, golf), the little league and middle school football teams were all introduced, the band was introduced and did a brief performance, and the cheerleading squad also did several routines. Garrard County also recognized the 2009 fastpitch softball regional championship team that finished 6th in the state.

 

After that, there was a tunnel made by little leaguers and the band and the football players were all introduced. The roster has 51 players so it took a while, but was well worth it. Afterwards the team had a brief "maroon/white" intrasquad scrimmage.

 

The scrimmage teams were divided evenly among all classes, so there really was no first team/second team on the field. In some cases the JV quarterback was playing with the varsity tailback, so it was hard to make any judgments on the performance.

 

What I can say is the size of the team is better than in recent years. There are 20 listed offensive/defensive linemen, which is more than I've seen in ages at Garrard. The skill positions are stout, with several players looking solid at the receiver spot. Both quarterbacks (one a freshman, one a sophomore) had their bright spots, too. And there was definitely quite a bit of hitting going on!

 

All-in-all, I think this team has potential. The opener with Anderson County will be tough, but I think this Lions group could make a little noise in the district. Everyone I spoke with last night was really anxious to get this season going; just two more weeks!:clap:

Also, it was mentioned last night that Garrard opens at home with Anderson. This will be the first home opener in seven years (Marion County - 2002), and only the second time they've opened at home since 1993.
