PepsiCo, the makers of Mountain Dew soda, says it has reached out to a dentist working to save children's teeth in eastern Kentucky, after ABC News reports on the problem of tooth decay, or "Mountain Dew mouth," in the region.

 

Dr. Edwin Smith, a dentist in Barbourville, Ky., invested $150,000 of his own money to build a mobile dental clinic, Kids First Dental Care, inside an 18-wheel truck.

I don't think drinking Mountain Dew as an teenager up is bad for you, but from the womb may be another story. Thought Mountain Dew got a bad rap on this show, am certain candy for lunch and supper,sweet cereal,etc. played a large part also.

I'm not sure, I've talked to dentists who specifically said Mountain Dew is significantly worse than other soft drinks.

It is when you drink half a dozen or more a day, or you drink nothing but soda pop instead of water.

Another thing is the lack of public/city water systems in the hills. City water has flouride added to it. Most of these communities rely on well water with no additives. If the government really wanted to help these folks, they would cut loose with some money to put in public water projects. It would increase the health of the residents in the affected areas, plus provide some good paying construction jobs.

This would be quite an undertaking, but you are right.

And if the Big Bang would have had a little less energy or more matter, the Big Bang would have exploded into itself to form a lifeless crunch! My new favorite saying (borrowed from tezzyrice, I believe)- "if an IF was a 5th, we'd all be drunk!" :lol:

I applaud Pepsi for assisting individuals/families in Kentucky!!

 

That being said . . . I always hate it when TV shows depict eastern kentucky individuals as being barefoot, ignorant individuals. The world takes that and generalizes it to the entire population.

I would guess that the mother who walked an 8 mile round trip to get her GED would. The trip might be longer for some.

This is a very important part in keeping healthy teeth along with using a toothpaste with flouride. Bottled water and water from a well doesn't have the flouride. I used bottled water for mixing formula on the 3rd child due to where we lived at the time. He has had more cavities than the other two.

I'm sure some will. But many of the most neglected won't have a chance.

 

You're right. Perhaps part of the money that PepsiCo puts into the area will include transportation of some sort, for those that do not have any.
