malachicrunch Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Just had an interesting experience at Blockbuster. Went down to rent a couple of movies for the weekend. Had a couple to return, and they were late. Walked in, put the 2 movies I had in the return slot, and proceeded to pick up a the 2 movies for tonite. When I get to the cashier, I am expecting to get hit with 1.25 for the restocking fee, since they don't charge late fees any more. Well miss cashier takes my card, looks up my account and tells me I have 2 items on the account. I tell her, "yes I know, I turned them in." She then explains to me they are 20 days late. I say OK, what are you trying to tell me? She then tells me that after 20 days you bought them. First I asked, why I hadn't been called. She was sure we had been called. I don't think so. Then I asked as to how I was informed of this policy. I said I see the 1.25 restocking fee nex to the proclamation of no late fees. Nowhere does it say 20 days and they're yours. She tells me it is in the fine print on the reciept. OK great. Now the 34 dollar question. What are you to charge me for these two movies which I have returned? Yep. 34 bucks. I then tell her, nope, aint happenin. I want to see a manager. She is now becoming a little upset with me, and tells me she is the manager, and if I refuse to pay for them , then she would have to pay for them herself. And I told her that was even more stupid than me paying for them. Why would you have to pay for two movies that have been returned in good shape? At this point I'm more in shock than anything else. I feel I have to try one more time. I ask to provide me with her supervisor, to which she responds "they will tell you the same thing." I again reiterate that I have been renting at this location for years, and I feel that I should not have to buy these movies. She again restates that she would have to if I didn't. Then she gets out her purse and pulls out a credit card. I said hold on, I will pay for them, but you will never see my face in this store again. She just looks at me and swipes her card! She pretty much then hands me the movies and asks me to leave the store. I put the movies down and left. Amazing! Anyone use Netflix??

The only time I go to Blockbuster is to buy used movies.
theguru Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I found this on Blockbusters website: Membership rules apply for rentals. Store rentals are due back at the date and time stated on the transaction receipt. There is no additional rental charge if a member keeps a rental item up to 7 days beyond the pre-paid rental period. After 7 days beyond the due date, Blockbuster will automatically convert the rental to a purchase on the 8th day and will charge the member the selling price for the item in effect at the time of the rental. Member then has 30 days to return the product and receive a credit for the selling price charged, less a $1.25 restocking fee. These terms available at participating stores only. Franchisee restocking fees may vary. See store or blockbuster.com for complete terms and conditions.
theguru Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 If I read that right you were correct and she was wrong unless it is a local store policy. They should have credited you all but the $1.25.
NHS BIG DADDY Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I would print out what Guru just posted and hand it to the lady and tell her thanks for the free movies!
malachicrunch Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 For some reason, I really didn't have much of a probelm with late fees when they charged them. I do have a problem with this. And if my rentals were 20 days late, why didn't I recieve credit on my account? And dumbest of all, why would an employee have to pay if I refused? Like I said I have been a patron of that store since they opened. More than once I had to take back a faulty movie or game and got little more than a sorry. They have lost my business for good. I know it doesn't make or break them, however such treatment of a longtime faithful patron is not a good business practice which in the long term will effect their business.
Les Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Who in the world would have movies LATE FOR 20 DAYS! YIKES.
theguru Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I agree it doesn't make sense. Also, since their website says different I wonder if the employee misunderstood BB's rules?
malachicrunch Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 Who in the world would have movies LATE FOR 20 DAYS! YIKES. You kidding? Alright show of hands. Who have had movie rentals for longer than 2 weeks?
nkuclubbaseball19 Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 You kidding? Alright show of hands. Who have had movie rentals for longer than 2 weeks? :isurrender:

I read the link. Thanks. Do you think she really paid for the movies? I did get my card out and offered to pay. Now I think about it she seemed really unstable. I'm going to call tomorrow to see if I can get any better answers. What a trip. Like I said, they they won't recieve another dime from me.
malachicrunch Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 :isurrender: Obviously:isurrender: me too:lol:
rockmom Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 You kidding? Alright show of hands. Who have had movie rentals for longer than 2 weeks? Me....and I got whacked for overdue fees far in excess of the cost of the movies (this was before the no late fee policy), which is why I went to Netflix. I'm so horrible with returning movies. I had 3 movies I got right before Christmas with Netflix, and just dropped them in the mail last week.:ohbrother:

rockmom Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Do you like Netflix? I love it. I pay one monthly fee, and I can adjust my subscription based on my needs. For instance, when I know a really busy time is coming up (like Derby for me), then I can reduce the number of movies I get at a time and save some money too. I usually subscribe to the 3 at a time deal, and I can watch on-line movies and old TV Shows as well. I love the recommendations, because I've watched some really obscure movies that were awesome based on my previous ratings of movies I'd watched. I never have had to wait for a movie I wanted in my queue, and usually, I drop movies in the mail on my way to work, and two days later I have more in my mail box. The one time there was a few day wait because of some sort of issue, they issued me a credit without my even asking.
