Why do we worship at the altar of the free market?

 

I just bird walked I know, but I support the stimulus even if there is some fat.

 

And while were at it please provide specific instances of what this bill will do to stimuluate the economy and what it will do to help people who are still able to pay their bills but could still use a little help.

With all due respect this answer is just so much new age mumbo jumbo as far as I'm concerned. It seems to me to be a smoke screen for not knowing how to answer a specific complaint.

 

I'm going to turn it on you and please have the courtesy to answer my question. Why do you think that this stimulus (I prefer porkulus) is going to do anything other then push us further into debt? If you support it then surely you have to have a reason why and I want specifics of why you support it.

And this thread isn't about what package is before us, but what we'd choose to do. I started this thread because I want to know everyone's ideas, if they have any.

Before acemona jumps on you and tells you how unChristian you are......keep in mind that it is our duty to help those who can not help themselves. While the market itself is amoral, many of the economic agents who make up market do look out for the best interest of others.

 

Why?

I would make the government cut costs, especially all their wasteful spending on programs like welfare and a host of others.

 

The market will work itself out on its own. Some may not survive it, but that's the way it is. Throwing money at the problem sure isn't going to help it though.

Tax cuts for those that actually pay taxes.

 

Less government spending on non-vital programs. (National Endowment for the Arts and NPR jump to mind. There are others.)

How is asking for solutions to a problem - as opposed to just complaining - new age mumbo jumbo? That is one of the things that many of my high school kids lack and something that I work on and promote with them. Complaining keeps one static. Recognizing the problem and finding a way to do something about it leads to progress, even if not immediately.

We as a nation were living far beyond our means believing that the growth in our economy would continue unabated. That kind of growth is unsustainable, unless you have a much needed commodity such as oil. Face it, we were living like kings on imaginary wealth.

 

In my opinion, nothing should be done by the government. This correction was unpreventable and much needed. We need to learn to live within our means again. Instead, the government is throwing ridiculous amounts of money at the problem, hoping to bring us back to the 1990's.

I'm looking for specifics. The American Public may have the solution. But we can't complain about specific actions being taken, and only offer general solutions.

 

Why not? That is our government. We can't vote on every issue so we elect officials to do so. If we don't like their solutions we certainly should complain about their specific actions until they and their so called experts come up with an action we do like. If they fail to do so we can vote them out next time.

The problem is that everyone wants there project to get the funding. This goes for Republican and Democrate but none and I repete NONE want to give up anything. Lets borrow more money to help out.

That is good. One was as bad as the other. Neither is going to fix the problem. The problem has been going on for along time with no end in sight. Many people in Washington, both Democrate and Republican, are to blame for this. JMO.

We need to fall on our sword. I have been consistent with this position. Banks, financial institutions, and companies need to fail, the stock market needs continued price correction, people need to lose their jobs. All non-essential (military, some infrastructure) government spending needs to be frozen. The world is flat. When we have had our sense of entitlement stripped from us by pure necessity, then we might then be competetive with the Brazils and Indias of the world.
