Beechwood continues to post wins. Obviously the 2 seed in the district does not matter. But the 3/4 certainly does. I am sure whomever is the 3 seed will feel they have a gret shot at winning the district game. But.....Beechwood....with the exception of the Newport game continues to impress.

I was suprised by the outcome in this one with the Indians playing on their home flood. Beechwood had big men in foul trouble very early, yet were able to overcome it with their outside shot.

 

Holy Cross did a nice job of controling the tempo of the game. I was suprised to see Giwa having success in the post. You don't see that a whole lot from a 5' 9" players.

 

The press seemed to trip Beechwood up at the end of the game. i would be interested to see if Holy Cross uses the press the entire game if they play in Districts.

Romes rallies Tigers:

 

Just when it looked as if Holy Cross had shut down Beechwood star Brian Romes, the Tigers and Romes came roaring to life in the fourth quarter Wednesday to capture a key district win, 53-45.

 

On consecutive possessions, Romes hit a jumper in the lane and a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to seven. Until that point, Holy Cross held Romes to one field goal through the first three quarters.

 

Romes capped off his fourth-quarter spurt with a breakaway dunk in the game's final minute.............

First time I have seen Coach Schumate at Beechwood, he and the other coaches do a great job! Could he be there for a while? How is the feeder system now? Can they continue doing well in basketball? This staff seems to have what it takes.

 

I like Beechwood in a re-match in a few weeks. Not sure who will win the HC game Vs CCH on Friday, depends if HC can hold Maile.

It is hard to say whether he will be there for a while. Unfortunately for Beechwood, I think he is a coach that will be in demand. Beechwood is a tough place to coach basketball because you never have the best talent in the school playing basketball. So if a top level job opens that Shumate likes, he will likely move on.

 

As to the talent and future, next year will be a challenge as this team is senior dominated and the current junior and sophomore class don't have the same level of talent as this senior group. However, freshman, 8th and 7th grade teams are all very solid, having success and with talent. Get through next year and Beechwood will be good for several years...as long as enough of the talent keeps playing basketball.

I don't know that he's only 5'9". He only looked maybe an inch or two shorter than Romes who was guarding him and he's 6'1"-6'2". Still he's strong for a point guard and his moves were very effective so the height doesn't matter.

Great game but I'm not convinced Beechwood is better.

 

The dunk was nice they have a couple guys who can throw down with ease.

Beechwood has been proving they are the better team all season no matter who they are playing. Give them credit.
