Theoldguy Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 For the folks in Davies County! If you aren't bringing a radio crew to the game, you can listen to it via The CovCath Internet Radio Network at the link below. Note the time shown is NKy time (EST) not WKy time (CST)....so plan accordingly. CovCath Colonel Varsity Basketball vs. Davies County (KY) 02:00PM (EST) Covington Catholic Colonel Varsity Basketball vs. Davies County, live from Park Hills
tezzyrice Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Thanks for the link. I like listening to the Cov. Cath games. The two guys who do the game bring a lot of energy, very entertaining.
B-Ball-fan Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Thanks for the link. I like listening to the Cov. Cath games. The two guys who do the game bring a lot of energy, very entertaining. I agree. They're excellent and they provide a great service! For 5 years now they've voluntarily poured their hearts into covering CovCath Basketball, Football, Baseball and Soccer. Other than Bishop Brossart, they pretty much started the trend that's catching on everywhere in high school sports. Kentucky high school sports have a great history and their innovative addition has only enhanced the pleasure of following it. History has been made again and I for one am completely thankful to be given the chance to stay in the loop so consistently and easily. High School sport just became all that much more fun.! Good Stuff :thumb:

Good Stuff :thumb: To be fair you can't say "other than Brossart." Even Mark Wehry will tell you that Dave Shabel was a big help in getting it started. So we can agree that they are two "pioneers" and their dedication is impressive. I am somewhat surprised that other schools havent tried it but , on the other hand, knowing the commitment involved I guess I shouldn't be. Its not easy.

That's why I didn't omit mentioning Brossart to begin with because I didn't want to deny them of their due either. I kind of wonder if you'd be out for my head if I had failed to. I would say that most would've read it that I was most certainly including them all as pioneers. If anyone read otherwise it was not my intent. I was just responding to a comment about these fantastic CovCath guys that tezzyrice had originally made.
Mustang Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I now understand that Daviees County did not make the trip up and the game will not be played.
Mustang Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 That's why I didn't omit mentioning Brossart to begin with because I didn't want to deny them of their due either. It's no big deal. We started doing games back in 2002 and CovCath joined in shortly thereafter. With cell phone capabilities, ethernet, etc., it's much easier now than it was back then. It does amaze me, that with the student interest in broadcasting, etc., that more schools don't do it. Maybe Mark and I need to have an informational get-together somewhere some night and discuss what it takes, the time involved, costs, equipment requirements, and do a sample broadcast demonstrtation. Actually with good sponsorship, you could probably make money broadcasting your games. I really feel that broadcasting our games over the internet and making the broadcast archives (a big benefit over radio) available on demand, has been invaluable to our athletics programs at Brossart. If anything, I think it might be the fear of the unknown that prevents schools from jumping in. I'm presently working with Nicholas County High School on getting them set up and "on the air."

If I am not mistaken, didn't Mark Wehry graduate from Holy Cross?
Flotsam Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Did Davies County call and cancel? The last report I have from Park Hills was that Davies County had not called to officially cancel but was not there. The western part of the state was slammed with the snow and ice. Just wondering what their status is.

Theoldguy Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Daviess Co. currently has a lot of problems with telephones both land lines and cells. Communication is a major problem around Western Kentucky. When I got to CovCath and didn't see any buses, I figured this is what happened. In fact, I was sort of surprised that this game hadn't been canceled prior but since I hadn't seen or heard of it being canceled I just went over. I told some of the people there that they wouldn't believe all the problems that the Western part of the Commonwealth was having and it didn't surprise me one bit about Davies not calling, as more than likely they couldn't! What did surprise me, was the many people who didn't know about the extent of the problems our fellow citizens of the Commonwealth were having in WKy. I just wanted to add that it wasn't any of the CovCath administration that were surprised, just some fans that were surprised at the amount of the damage done to WKy
Irish Cat Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 For those not involved in the situation, its hard to image how bad it is. I was only without power for 3 nights. I am one of the lucky few to have power currently. Telephones are still hit and miss, but at least more places are getting power so you can buy gas, groceries etc.

Theoldguy Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 If I am not mistaken, didn't Mark Wehry graduate from Holy Cross? Yes, but he is the black sheep  of his family as everyone else from what I understand (male) did graduate from CovCath, including his own son. :thumb:
West Ky Reporter Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I'm from Owensboro and it's been a devasting scene around here and many counties surrounding Daviess. 80% of Owensboro lost power Tuesday night and now the number is down to 50%. Ohio county still has 85% with out power. Saying it will take up to 7-10 days more before everyone has power restored. Most land lines are still down but cell service came up last night. The coaches would have called I'm sure if they could but no way to communicate until late last night-today. I've lived thru an F-3 tornado and the wind storm last Sept and this is by far worse than those......by far.
