Ironically, the economic stimulus package is filled with more money for education than is for infrastructure.

 

We received an email from our superintendent asking us to call and tell Geoff Davis to support this. In our district it would not create new jobs but rather would be used to pay for construction that is already committed to and will be done whether we get the federal funds or not. Just makes it easier to pay for.

WASHINGTON — The one-time, multibillion-dollar congressional stimulus offers public schools "an extraordinary opportunity," not just to plug gaping state and local budget holes, but to improve education in ways that have eluded the USA for decades, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Thursday.

The stimulus, which includes about $141 billion for schools and colleges overall, proposes nearly $12 billion in new stopgap funding this year for two key federal programs and even more in 2010. Critics of the handout say it will reset schools' expectations dramatically upward after 2010.

 

"This money is meant to plug holes in budgets that are being cut because state and local revenue is down," said Mike Petrilli of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a conservative Washington education think tank. "This is redefining the federal role."

 

Educators have long said two programs — Title I aid to poor children and funding for the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) — are vastly underfunded. Duncan, the former Chicago Public Schools CEO, agreed, saying he's been "on the other side of this fence" for years.

 

In addition to more funding for school construction, college loans and other programs, the stimulus promises:

 

• $19.4 billion for Title I this year and the same next year, up from $13.9 billion in 2008;

 

• $16.9 billion for IDEA this year, $17.9 billion in 2010, up from $10.9 billion in 2008.

 

Duncan, 44, also said he and his wife plan to send their two children, ages 7 and 4, to public schools in the Washington, D.C., area. "Diversity is really important to our family," he said, "and we're looking for a great school that's diverse."

There is no better place to spend money in this country than improving education. We may not see the return for years but it is well worth the investment, IMO.

Our area schools are slated to receive a large chunk if it is passed. Part of that is because our area has led the state in unemployment for 10 years and we are having to re-educate our population for a new type of industry (textiles and furniture were the old ones).

Yep, take their kids from them and give them a chance at life. They're stuck in a vicious cycle staying with uncaring parents.

I love it that the government is going to spend money on education, but is this really going to help out the economy TODAY/NOW? Today people are losing their jobs, their homes! Families are going without necessities, like medicine, dental care, proper nutrition due to the lose of income. Families are falling apart due to parents being out of work or out of hope. If this plan can help out NOW/TODAY, then great, but if what is being said is true, then while I am happy, as I have a child in college and I work with the disable it is great, but something needs to be done NOW/TODAY to help out the economy and fast..... The middle class is hurting and hurting badly....

The education part of the money looks to be geared toward construction. I really think they are just wanting to hit the panic button to get money out there as soon as possible. An educated workforce is the only true economic stimulus. If people are uneducated they are unemployable.

 

The former secretary of the economic cabinet in Kentucky - certainly no liberal by anyone's standards - continually preached the fact that it was hard to attract high paying jobs to this area because of our state's overall poor education system.

Part of it is geared to construction but part of it is to fund an underfunded Title I program that is aimed at students who are not reading on the grade level that they are in. Schools are facing a cut of getting rid or reducing these programs that are trying to teach slow readers how to read.

 

The other part is to fund IDEA which is aimed at helping resource students (used to be called special ed students). This is extremely expensive department in each school system considering all the issues that they deal with from speech to mental handicaps to collaboration to bring students into the regular classroom setting to behavioral issues.
