Very good?

Yes

Just as good?

Wrong

Regional championship games from 1983-93

1993 Cumberland 5, Corbin 4

1992 Middlesboro 4, Corbin 0

1991 Cumberland 7, Knox Central 4

1990 Cumberland 1, Corbin 0

1989 Cumberland 12, Corbin 2

1988 Cumberland 15, Harlan 2

1987 Cumberland 5, Middlesboro 4

1986 Cumberland 16, Corbin 5

1985 Cumberland 4, M.C. Napier 3 (Cumberland was in 14th Region)

1984 Middlesboro won (no score available)

1983 Cumberland 7, M.C. Napier 5 (Cumberland was in 14th Region)

Middlesboro also won it in 1982. Very clever of you to leave that off.

The biggest difference that I can tell between Middlesboro and Cumberland is that Middlesboro continued to win and Cumberland disappeared. I mean, Middlesboro won it in 1998, 1999, and 2002 as well.

However, what I want everyone to remember is that neither SL nor NL were in the 13th region until just a couple of years ago. They have shared just as much success in the 12th region. The Cards should be awesome this year. The coach seems to be coming into his own. I also heard that NL thumped Williamsburg in a scrimmage so the road to the championship probably runs through London this year.

That's a pretty bold statement, Considering the fact that scrimmages mean nothing...:sssh:

"There is no real winner in scrimmages. Coaches usually throw staff and try to get as many players a possible in the game. This includes using JV players that will never see the light of day"

I didn't leave it off. I began when Cumberland's run began. Cawood also won a regional championship in 1982.

You said in the 80s and early 90s. I don't know what 2002 has to do with the discussion.

That's true for the most part and I am so glad that you hang on my every word, but when I team thumps another team in a scrimmage, from beginning to end, it is pretty easy to tell who the better team is.

And to HDE, why would the title in 1982 not be of importance when comparing the two teams? After all, I did say the 80's and 1982 would fall into that. And no, 2002 doesn't have anything to do with that. I am simply stating that it seems Middlesboro has been a power for years whereas Cumberland was only a power for about a decade.

In my honest opinion, HC will probably lose about 15 games this year. Coach Lewis will pick right up where he left off.

Go Cards!!

Cumberland used to beat up on Laurel County during this time frame as well. :sssh:

The point is that we have had some good baseball teams in Harlan County before and with the consolidation we hope to begin a new tradition with the talent that we have and will have in the future. So you can question our tradition, talent and our coach all you like, cards1b21, but I think you're in for a surprise when the Bears take the field.

Do the Black Bear play their first game today?

I'm looking forward to watching this year's team and especially the 7 Seniors who all return as starters from last year's Regional Championship team. These players were also seniors on the 2008 4A State Championship team. It's a very tight group and all of them except for Merrick have played baseball together since 6th grade.

Bell's Seniors to watch:

#1 - Adam Overbay (OF / LHP)

#2 - Chase Ely (OF / RHP / 1B)

#6 - Shawnta Zachery (2B / SS / RHP)

#9 - Matt Simpson (C / 3B)

#11 - Monte Merrick (OF / RHP)

#15 - Spencer Greer (SS / RHP)

#17 - Robby Slusher (1B / RHP)

Harlan Co. will be a big factor in the 13th region very soon. There has been some very good talent coming up in the Harlan area youth leagues lately, so with most of it congregating at Harlan Co., they will be heard from.

I understand Cody Jones is out with an ACL injury. Williamsburg will have to vastly improve on fundamentals, fielding, and hitting to challenge in the district this year. I'm a huge Williamsburg follower, but I'm also a realist. I just don't think they have the pitching to cover these other weaknesses, as I thought was aptly displayed in their scrimmage with North Laurel tonight. It's difficult for me to understand why they seemingly have the same problems each year. The last group that was fairly sound fundamentally was the year Andy Greer was a senior, and had solid pitching from Reynolds, Foley, and Jones, outstanding defensive catching from Root, and a pretty solid infield and outfield. That group was also pretty good offensively and very unselfish. Is it due to the little league programs diminishing? Is it just a cycle? Is it coaching? Maybe all of the above, I really don't know. I hope I'm wrong about this season's team and they improve by leaps and bounds. Moses does have an outstanding bat and is as sound fundamentally as any kid I've seen there, and Barton has alot of talent that should be developed. Any way I've rambled, best of luck on the season.

Talent wise, I think that Williamsburg will be the 4th best team in the 50th district this year. They have a chance to finish higher in the standings, but it won't be because their talent is better, at least not in my opinion. They are the smallest school and have the smallest talent pool to pick from, add in the small number of players who they are developing in their LL system and I think you can guess where the problem lies.

Barton is a good talent, but I expect him to struggle some this year if he is their #1 pitcher. Hopefully people won't put too much pressure on him to be a dominating pitcher as a freshman as I just don't see that for him this year. I'm afraid that pitching will not be a strength for the Jackets this year.

I agree wholeheartedly with most if not all of your post. People will put the ball in play against Williamsburg and if the error fest of recent years continues (as it did in the NL scrimmage) it may be a long year.

To be honest I think the LL system is just plain bad. I would love to see it disbanded and have a regional league of Corbin, Laurel, and Williamsburg governed by USSSA or AABC. It would help greatly getting kids more prepared for middle and HS.

Barton is a nice talent, but needs room and patience to grow. If allowed to grow and to play within himself he will have a very nice career.

Just also not sure the talent is utilized properly as several seem to be out of position, and it seems senority sometimes comes into play more than talent. Sorry just a big believer that your best 9 play no matter what, and I think its debatable that this is the case.

If i were to pick it today I would say South wins the district with Corbin a close 2nd, Whitley 3rd, and unfortunately the Jackets in 4th.

You said was Middlesboro not just as good during that run, and whether you add in 1982 or not, it's clear they were not.

Whether you have enough character to admit when you're wrong is up to you.

I'm lost here, First You say this...

There is no real winner in scrimmages. Coaches usually throw staff and try to get as many players a possible in the game. This includes using JV players that will never see the light of day.

Then You say this...

I also heard that NL thumped Williamsburg in a scrimmage so the road to the championship probably runs through London this year.

So which Is it? I'm just wondering...:idunno:

Buddy, I have no dog in this fight. I am not a fan of Middlesboro or Cumberland, I was just simply stating that it seems Middlesboro was just as good during that time. I still feel that way.

(0-3) start for Harlan Co. couldn't really be would you all were anticipated. However, I'm serious when I say this, it is so early and for all I know, they could have played 3 great games and just ended up on the losing end. They really need tomorrows game with Bville to happen to possibly get a W under the belt.

Bell County has started off very hot and although anyone could have beaten LC that bad or worse, the Clay County win is a respectable win.

Corbin looks to be on a roll as well as they beat two good teams in KC and Middlesboro.

And SL, even though they have only played 1 game, looks dominate and in should be the team to beat.
