Stimulus Checks

Featured Replies

Does that make it right that a person only working part time 20-25 hours a week while not going to school gets all the stimulus check money and a student who has a legit reason for only working 25 hours, while going to school 16 hours a week doesn't see a dime?

Depends on what you see as "right". In many cases the students were claimed as dependants and the parents did receive the checks. Upper income wage earners were an exception. It's another way higher earners foot the bill.

For a college student I'd say I paid more than most.

That's good though, isn't it? Sure beats the alternative. :D

No they did not, not if the child was 18 or older by years end.

If you were 17 yrs or older/full time student/someone could claim you as a dependent neither the student or the parent received anything. The elderly did receive paperwork to complete even if they didn't have to file a tax return. I know this because I completed it for my parent.

Correct.

Unemployment.

I dunno, here soon it may be easier. Thank you Mr. Obama.

I can tell you, I got back no money last tax season. And I was taxed, I think it was around 25 or it could have been 20 percent. It may not be a lot to you, because you're out in the "Real world", and believe me, I know that my parents are taxed VERY heavily, but when I'm going to school fulltime, and working as much as I do, and that much of my money is taxed, and I see NOTHING from these stimulus checks, it bothers me. Especially because my parents don't see it either. They got nothing for me OR for my brother who was only 17 at the time. And then I see the people come into my work who did recieve the stimulus and it's just kind of disgusting. [Not ALL, but a good few].

If you worked 25 hours a week and were taxed at a rate of 25% you either a) had someone do your taxes that made a mistake, b) had income from other sources, or c) have a pretty well paying job for a college student.

Well, that's my college level accounting experienced opinion anyways.

I agree, while I am no accountant, that seems extremely high...

I looked at overall tax. That includes everything. I don't do my taxes so I'm not intelligent when it comes to that stuff lol. And I'm not an accountant. Basically I made 18,500 and I got taxed TOTAL [medicare blah blah] around 4000 dollars.

is this income you earned in 2007 or 2008? If it is 2008, you will be getting a decent return in a month or so. If it is 2007, you need to look into filing an amended return if you got 0 back.

I was always under the impression that at this level of income, one should get all their federal taxes back as a refund. Would someone that is up on tax law please comment, as to whether that is correct or not?

That would be fabulous because I payed over 1500 dollars in federal.

If you only paid $1500 in Federal, you probably wouldn't be getting anything back....That's not even a 10% tax rate...
