Stimulus Checks

Featured Replies

No college kid on here paid a boatload of taxes. You may have paid some social security, local and state taxes which are an entirely different subject. You'll get back most, if not all, of your federal income taxes. When you graduate and work your way up to a higher level of income, you'll find out exactly how much a "boatload" is.

I can tell you, I got back no money last tax season. And I was taxed, I think it was around 25 or it could have been 20 percent. It may not be a lot to you, because you're out in the "Real world", and believe me, I know that my parents are taxed VERY heavily, but when I'm going to school fulltime, and working as much as I do, and that much of my money is taxed, and I see NOTHING from these stimulus checks, it bothers me. Especially because my parents don't see it either. They got nothing for me OR for my brother who was only 17 at the time. And then I see the people come into my work who did recieve the stimulus and it's just kind of disgusting. [Not ALL, but a good few].

Does that make it right that a person only working part time 20-25 hours a week while not going to school gets all the stimulus check money and a student who has a legit reason for only working 25 hours, while going to school 16 hours a week doesn't see a dime?

If your parents still claim you as a dependant why would they have not gotten $300 extra for you?

Not sure why, but my parents did not recieve 300 for me, or for my 17 year old brother, because he was turning 18 at the end of this year.

As mentioned earlier, I believe if the child was over 18 then the parents didn't receive any money for the child.

Define a lot.

It just sounds like some college students want some easy money.

Lowering taxes permanently for individuals and businesses is the answer. News is that he wants to lower taxes for the middle class, but I'll will not hold my breath on how he defines middle class.

I'd say I paid a decent amount for being a full time college student, I looked at my last pay check to see what it was for 2008:

Federal: was $2,520

Medicare: $350.00

Social Security: $1,350.00

KY State $918.00

Boone Co.: $200.00

So if you take out social security and medicare, only include federal, state, and local then I paid $3,638.00. But medicare and ss are big chunks of change. I'm not asking for free money, but the person on welfare getting a check that contributes nothing to the system, while the college students contributing a few grand; that just seems flawed. Maybe I just like to complain too much.:irked:

For a college student I'd say I paid more than most.

Just looked it up, if you had childern under 17 as of the Dec 31, 2007 got the $300 per.

Here are some other reasons you may not have gotten one...This is from the IRS's website

Q: I know some people won’t get a stimulus payment. How do I know if I’m one of them?

A: You won’t get a stimulus payment in 2008, if any of the following apply to you:

  • You don’t file a 2007 tax return.
  • Your net income tax liability is zero and your qualifying income is less than $3,000. To determine your qualifying income, add together your wages, net self-employment income, nontaxable combat pay, Social Security benefits, certain Railroad Retirement benefits and certain veterans’ payments.
  • You can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return (whether or not you actually are claimed as a dependent on someone else's return). For example, this would include a child or student who can be claimed on a parent’s return.
  • You do not have a valid Social Security Number.
  • You are a nonresident alien.
  • You file Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040PR or Form 1040SS for 2007.

And that was the bogus part, I got nothing, and the folks got nothing. They were actually going to give me the money if they got it because they felt I deserved it, as I've paid for all my bills(they don't charge rent) since I was 16. Just dumb when you look at some people who got the money and others who didn't.

To be honest, I really wouldn't have cared if I got nothing, but I felt that the parentals should have.

lol so IF you can be claimed.

I wouldn't have a problem if they gave it to my parents, since they still do help me out with some stuff [insurance, and they are going to help me pay off my school loans]. But to not give it to either of us, is bogus.

Did either of you file a tax return in 2007?

That's the money that the rebate was based on not money taxed in 2008.

I HAD to file one. I didn't know it was an option lol. I'll be honest, daddy did it for me ha. But yes I did. I have since I started working.

It isn't right one bit. Somebody should have gotten something out of it.

I've filed a tax return every year since I was 18. The system was broken, it was dumb in my mind.

No way, unless you're counting taxes other than federal income tax which are not related to the stimulus checks. Even with all the other taxes included, if you're in the 25% bracket you need a new tax preparer. As to your parents, I agree that they should not have been excluded as excluding upper income wage earners was wrong.
