Florida Not A Lock For Title Game With Win?

Featured Replies

In the same vein, an email from a worried Florida voter popped up this morning in my inbox for the second time in just a few days:

UF is still #6 in Sagarin's rankings today, and not really anywhere close to #5 Utah. How sure ARE we that the computers will jump UF up after playing a 13th game? And how sure are we that if they don't, even a #1 ranking from the humans would be enough to keep UF #2 ahead of the Big 12 South runner-up? I would like someone somewhere to run through this with more than just a "Florida and Alabama in a semi-final" bit of "analysis."

This is a great point that I'm not sure I would have considered otherwise, and that most people are overlooking in their rush to deem Alabama-Florida the winner-take-all primer for the mythical championship. That's certainly true for Alabama if it finishes 13-0, and I assume it's true for Florida in the human polls if the Gators take the mighty SEC at 12-1. But the computers? That's not so certain.

Good question but I think it will work out like OU/UT did. UF will obviously move up in the computer rankings with a victory over the #1 BCS team. In addition, the voters will jump UF upto #2.

If UF wins and Utah ends up in front of UF then they ought to just let UC and Utah play for the championship.

Florida being ranked at #4 is what blows my mind. Given Bama' deserves the top spot since they are undefeated, but the Gators are clearly playing better than anyone in the country right now and yes that includes everyone in the Big XII South. At worst Florida should be #3, they deserve to be #2 IMO, but being ranked fourth is almost an injustice.

The voters will jump UF up, that's not the issue. Bama is not #1 in the computers, and would fall lower with the loss.

I think UF would be in, but this is an interesting look at the computer formula, and how things will play out...

The article poses a valid question. Who knows what will happen. I saw a brief show this weekend, on the men who compose the Rankings for the BCS.

Too many mathematical formulas, for me to comprehend.

If there was ever a year Florida was NOT going to jump a team, it would have been two seasons ago when they jumped Michigan.

No question. I heard the Sagarin guy on with Cowherd today and he's a serious math geek. I love math and my brain was hurting listening to him.

The Gators are "clearly" playing better than an Oklahoma team that has hung 60 four weeks in a row, including against two top 15 teams? Don't see it...

Agreed. The Gators and OU are killing their opponents. The challenge for OU is stopping the opponents.

OU is the team right now that I wouldn't want to be playing. Though giving up 40 points this weekend was a tad surprising, it's not a big problem when you routinely score 60.

I know that I'm the minority, but I don't really have a problem with the BCS.

But, if Florida beats 'Bama and doesn't play in the BCS title game, then something is wrong.

How many do you think they can put up on UF? I'd say 30 to 35.

I would rather play Oklahoma than Florida, but you're right. This should be the national championship, IMO.

Or OU against whoever wins the SEC ('Bama or Florida).

UF is in if they beat Bama but of course I thought they would be #3 this week after beating a top 20 team. The factor is going to be that extra game.

OU's offense is unreal. I would think at least that and maybe more. I'm just not quite as certain what to expect from their defense. Never been an OU fan before, but they are indeed a fun team to watch this year.
