I agree.

I would actually love to see them go back to public hangings. I would tail gate for this one.

I don't think the electric chair is used in any state any more.

Dangit...

Dangit...

I don't know that for a fact, but I do know that it is no longer used in KY. I don't think it is used in any state anymore, but I could be mistaken.

From: http://www.internationaljusticeproject.org/juvKentucky.cfm

"Kentucky's Means of Execution

Those inmates sentenced before March 31, 1998 will be given the choice between lethal injection and electrocution.

Those inmates sentenced after March 31, 1998 will be executed by lethal injection."

Another thing I found interesting is that a Kentucky statute prohibits the execution of the mentally retarded.

Kentucky has decommissioned the electric chair except for those whose capital crimes were committed prior to March 31, 1998 and choose to die by electrocution rather than the alternative of lethal injection.

Which is what I said in post #20. ;)

Do you know anything about the other states?

He murdered two children in Warsaw. Their mother survived by playing dead after being robbed, raped and stabbed 15 times.

Chapman asked for all his appeals to be stopped. He feels he deserves the death penalty and has made his peace with God.

Chapman is only the third person to be executed in Kentucky since the death penalty was reinstated.

He also attempted to murder another child who somehow survived. I don't remember if she escaped or played dead. Hopefully his execution will someway bring something positive to the surviving victims.

This guy is getting what he deserves. Any time you mess with the lives of others, especially children, and take them away, you have no reason to be on this earth anymore.

Not sure I am in support of the death penalty, still go back and forth in my head, but this one is a no brainer for me. He WANTS to be put to death, let him. He murdered INNOCENT children. He bear, raped, and assaulted the mother of the innocent children, who was innocent herself. Anyone who murders an innocent child, let alone two, doesn't have a place here on Earth.

Which begs the obvious question: Are there any DR inmates left with the option for 'Ol Sparky?

:sssh:

Tennessee has a law similar to Kentucky, but their cutoff date is December 31, 1998.

In Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia the condemned can choose the electric chair.

In Illinos and Oklahoma, you can be the electric chair is the alternative should other means of execution be deemed unconstituional, like the fat guy who argued that lethal injection was cruel because of his weight.

Which begs the obvious question: Are there any DR inmates left with the option for 'Ol Sparky?

If you go to the link in my post, it gives some stats.

As of December 8, 2003 Kentucky had 37 death row inmates:

8 African-Americans

28 Whites

1 Latino

1 Woman

Not sure why the latest "stats" were 5 years ago, but I'm assuming these numbers are fairly accurate. I can't remember the last time a KY inmate was executed, but I don't think there has been one since '03. They may have gotten off of "death row", though.

Which begs the obvious question: Are there any DR inmates left with the option for 'Ol Sparky?

I believe that 28 of the 37 death row inmates have that option.

13 inmates have been on death row for over 20 years, one of those for 28 years. The youngest on death row is 28, the oldest 66.
