Well here we are again the long time rivals meet again for the 2nd year in a row just earlier this year than last. What do you think? Last year the Purples beat the Devils to go to Papa John's in the semis can either of these 2 teams make it to the finals this year?

I think Bowling Green has a reasonable chance to make it to the finals again. They should get past Owensboro, but I don't know if or when they play John Hardin, but if they can get past John Hardin then they should make it to the finals. It is all a moot point in my opinion. I don't think anyone in 5A has anything for Highlands.

 

I think they should get past Owensboro because it appeared to be a somewhat close game between Owensboro and Warren Central. We have owned Warren Central for quite some time now:D and the only thing I am basing a bowling Green victory on is last week's Warren Central-Owensboro score. You never know though, that's why they play the game.

With 6 minutes left in their respective games, Owensboro led by 22-0 over Central, Central's ball, and Bowling Green led 24-14, Central's ball. The only difference is that Bowling Green stopped Central from scoring and had a finishing kick while Owensboro started to falter. So, you can look at the 45-14 and 22-14 results and come away with a conclusion, but really, Owensboro did a much better job for most of the game than Bowling Green did. And Central never led the Devils for even one second, while Central held the lead for 13:36 against BG, up until the midpoint of the second quarter. BG had 21 points in the last 5:22 of the game.

You apparently did not see that Bryan Station the(#4 seed out of Lexington)

gave the Bluebirds all they wanted and Highlands won on a TD in the final minute.

 

So to say nobody has anything for Highlands is a rediculous assumption especially with Highlands having to play 2 on the road against probably 2 teams that are better than Bryan Station. Playing on the road sometimes things happen.

 

I am going to call this game a toss up though could go either way. I hope the Devils can pull this one off but this is not the matchup I wanted in the

2nd round for sure. I do not know how many players BG rested against Hendo on Defense but Henderson putting that many points on BG leads me to think OHS should be able to do the same it is can the OHS D step it up a level and play 4 FULL quarters of football?

 

We all know both teams can put up points but the key to this game is who's defense can step it up and which team gets points off turnovers or special teams.

I don't necessarily how much better Central got over the year, but that John Hardin game was a function of how good John Hardin is/was, moreso than how bad Central played, which they did. John Hardin was IMO the second best team Central played all year (behind Boyle County), and a big reason why I felt they would be the ones to knock off Bowling Green.

 

Central was not a great team. The reasons for that are mixed, relating to talent and use of that talent, and general attitude of the program right now. But they were better than they showed at times this year, and so when they played well, or at least respectable, it always looked more surprising than it should have been to those that were simply comparing scores. Grayson County and Hopkinsville were perfect examples. Grayson County they played different (read: wrong) personnel for whatever reason, and so they lost by 3 to a bad team. Hopkinsville they took a while to do so, but they eventually put in their original (read: best) personnel, and they lost by 2 to a decent team. People came away with the impression that Hoptown must be awful because they nearly lost to Central, when I felt that result was a much clearer reflection of Central than the Grayson result, where they essentially played with their arm tied behind their back. That bore out very clearly when Hopkinsville devastated Grayson County in the playoffs, when the scores would seemingly have indicated a close game.

 

That's why I feel that it's just incredibly short sighted for someone to think that Bowling Green will win solely based on the score differential, when it was clear to someone who watched both games that they were extremely similar, right up to the last 6 minutes. That's not to say I don't think BG will win, because I think they will. I just don't think it's because Owensboro only beat Central by 8.

If Bowling Green were to win by this score I will eat crow but I do not see BG holding the Devils to just 7 and I don't see BG putting up 42 on the Devils D.

 

BG's D gave up a bunch of points to Henderson and OHS has a better running game than Hendo. I look for this to be one of those typical low scoring nail biting OHS vs BG games of old! Flip a coin for the winner.

True ... fumbles and turnovers are the great equalizer. Watch the Highlands vs Ashland score and you will see that last week was Highlands almost beating themselves. This Highlands team is arguably their best ever, and that is saying something. If Highlands doesn't win it all, it will be the shocker of the year.

 

PS...I am not a Highlands fan so this is all said without bias.
