The wildcats were lucky to have been in this game in the end. They played so poorly in the 1st half.

I know I've never been to a game with two roughing the kicker calls, luckily they didn't break the Guiness book record on the 3rd that was nullified. The Cats lost this game in the first half, looking at the stats, 290-50 at the half, amazing they even had a chance. The roughing the passer call was correct in my eyes, the defender hit helmet to helmet, and that was a very cruicial play. I can't think of another QB that also returns punts.....ever. Cobb is one heck of an athlete, but with what he has to work with, he is IT, he either can't complete the pass or his Wr's can't make a play. No running game to speak of, a bowl will be nice, but I can't wait until Newton is tossing the ball to Cobb in '09.

Can anyone explain the difference between "roughing" the kicker and "running into" the kicker?

 

I know UK got a "running into" the kicker in the Arkansas game, but I rarely see it called. Is it just severity of the contact?

 

In other news, Vandy may be better than UT (especially with Nickson playing), so hopefully UK can end the (regular) season on a high note.

I thought the roughing the passer call was bad, but UK did themselves in with the 2 roughing the kicker penalties and spotting Vandy a 24-7 lead. They always finish strong, but I would like to see them come out on fire from the beginning and not wait until the 2nd half to get going. Brooks said he has debated having them scrimmage a little before they come onto the field to get the juices flowing. That is the sign of a very young team. If they are ever going to get a fast start, the UT game would be the one to take out the Rocky Top crowd.

 

Coming into the season, I would have been happy with 6-6. But now, seeing what the potential is, I really would be happy to see 7-5 with a win over UT.

*When in question whether the foul is "running into" or "roughing", the foul is "roughing."

 

That not very clear, is it?

 

I bet that the 5-yard "running into" the kicker foul will be eliminated in the next couple years just like the 5-yard facemask was this year.

I think they should just change that rule to match the facemask. All facemasks are now 15-yard personal fouls...they should just go ahead and do the same with contact with a kicker and take any judgement out of it. That way the teams would know, if you touch the kicker, its 15 yards.

I was wondering if "running into" was when you didn't knock him over, but apparently you can knock the kicker down ("displace") and it still be "running into."

 

IMVHO, ALL of the UK penalties should have been "running into." Actually, I feel nearly all of them should be that way. It never gets called that way though, and doing it 3 times is pretty inexcusable anyway.

 

I really wish they'd do away with the "roughing" penalties. You can call unneccesary roughness if its warranted. Otherwise its just football.

My supervisor doesn't want any 5 yard "running into" fouls. It's either roughing, or it's nothing, which makes it simple.

 

Another philosophy is to call "running into" the kicker if the defender makes slight contact with the kicking leg, and "roughing" if the defender contacts the plant leg in any way.

 

I don't work in the SEC, so I don't know the criteria they're using.
