Conner spent millions in new facilities, they now call it Cooper...

All kidding aside, the Boone co. school district is hurting for finances, yet they built a tremendous new facility while Boone Co. and Conner need major improvements

WHAT TO WATCH: Since moving quarterback Patrick Bustle into a pass-catching role and putting Chad Lawrence under center, Simon Kenton is 4-0. Lawrence has thrown only 32 passes but has rushed 50 times for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Bustle, who lines up as both a tight end and slot receiver, has turned into a reliable target, catching six passes for 97 yards.

WHAT'S NEXT: The winner will advance to play either Henry Clay or Boone County in the regional finals.

BOTTOM LINE: In the two teams' first meeting of the season, Conner scored two touchdowns in the game's final 72 seconds to win 20-19. The rematch might not produce the same theatrics, but it should be close.

A shot at Redemption: By Ryan Ernst

Jeff Marksberry, your Simon Kenton football team is heading into the biggest game it's ever played in your tenure - a second-round playoff rematch with Conner, the team that handed your team its most heartbreaking loss of the season. Your thoughts?

"It's two great teams playing. And really we're two different teams. We've both made personnel changes. They've improved greatly since Week 3 and I feel like we have too."

Conner coach Dave Trosper, what about you?

"They're a different team now. They've added some wrinkles. They're a much better team now. But I think we're a much better team too."

OK. Got it. Same matchup, different teams. Regardless, the game, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today at Conner, has a lot to live up to. Conner's come-from-behind 20-19 victory over Simon Kenton on Sept. 12 was one of Northern Kentucky's best regular-season games.

Simon Kenton led 19-7 with 1:19 left before coughing up the lead and the critical district game.

"We didn't finish that game," Marksberry said. "We made mistakes and they took advantage. It's nice to have this second opportunity. Revenge isn't the right word, maybe redemption. Our kids are excited to play them again."

For the Pioneers, the loss was one of the lowest points in an up-and-down season that started with high hopes.

They were picked by Northern Kentucky's Class 6A coaches to win the district. Through seven games they were 3-4, never having won or lost two straight games. Simon Kenton's seventh game, a key district matchup with Boone County, resulted in a 42-7 home loss.

Rest of Story:
