I think Fairview will show up with a good game plan and give it their best shot. The problem is their best shot won't be good enough.

 

I said this before Raceland played Russell and I'll say it again here. The only way this game possibly remains close is if Raceland tries to open it up and go to the air for whatever reason. They started the game against Russell trying to do this and ended up with incompletions and punts. This allowed Russell to take the early lead, gain some confidence, and ultimately turn it into a pretty close game. Raceland's strength is their line and the 2 hard running backs. They can and should simply run over most teams they face.

 

I say Raceland wins 48-16.

While I agree with you to a degree, I think that Raceland had better not totally abandon the passing game. They'd better keep that as sharp as possible. I know at this point in the season, you have to keep climbing up the ladder, however, in the grand scheme they may eventually face the likes of Beechwood. And FWIW, I know you said "most teams" in your post, but they will not run over Beechwood in the event they meet, so I think a tune up in the air isn't all bad. Good luck to Coach Hoof and the Rams.

That's a good point. While it is difficult to see them coming out in a spread formation against teams they could easily overpower, I do understand that the passing game will likely be needed against some teams so I guess they have to get some practice in.

Now, we are putting the cart before the horse, we still have to win 3 games to even know if we CAN run against them and so do they. I hope we get the chance to play them......chances for this area to get on the carpet are fairly uncommon.

It is always good to see teams from our area make it to the championship game and I think Raceland is carrying the northeastern Kentucky torch this year. It would shock me if another team from our area makes it further than them.

I think balence is the key for Raceland. Sure Raceland has two outstanding running backs, that can accumulate a lot of yards on the ground, but you have to realize that most of what allowed that to happen is the pass. With two great RB's most teams would just line up in the wishbone, power I, or Wing T and run the ball at you, particularly with a very solid OL in front of the RB's. But, when you do that, you allow the opponent to stack the box and have a better chance of stopping, or at least slowing down, the RB's ability to gain yardage.

 

Racand is somewhere around 60/40 run/pass. And, that stops the defenses from stacking the box and respect the pass. Defenses have to leave the corners out, the safety back, and most times one or two LB's walked out. That opens the running lanes so Denton and Carver can attack the defense.

 

Let's not forget what got us to this point. We have two backs with over a thousand yards apiece, Denton and Carver. But, we also have a QB, Boyles, with over a thousand yards passing, and a WR with over 600 yards receiving (Selvage), and another one which would have over 500 yards receiving if he was not hurt most of the season, Tolliver.

 

Raceland's offense is diverse. It can run, and run well. It can pass, and pass more then efficiently. This spreads the defense and the offense can take what the defense gives it, behind a solid OL that can give Boyles time to pass, or can open running lanes for Denton and Carver. And, after the ball is in the air, it has receivers that can go and get the ball, and have yards after the catch.

 

A balanced and efficient offense is what got Raceland where it is, and that is what it will take to advance further into the playoffs.

I know what you mean, for years Raceland ran the wishbone, now it was more unpredictable then Russell's offense, but Raceland ran the ball 90% of the time. Teams stacked the box and Raceland RB's that could have had 2K yards, only had 1K yards. It was predictable. At times that made it hard on Raceland.

 

Russell has been fortunate, over the years everyone knew what they were going to do, and still couldn't stop it. That's a testament to the coaching staff. But, I do like some balance.

 

Two years ago Raceland passed 80% of the time, but we had a very good passer and a young backfield (Denton and Carver). Last year we were 60/40 pass/run, with a better backfield (Denton and Carver) and a good receiving corp. This year we are 60/40 run/pass with an experienced backfield (Denton and Carver) an experienced QB, and several good targets. I like being able to adapt to the personnel that you have. Flexibility is good, even though my wife would say that I am not very flexible.

In any class. Russell is the only team that has done it recent years and that is only twice. Ashland done it in '90. But, overall, our region doesn't get there much. We need to send more teams to the Championship game, and two or three times in 20 years is not enough.

It is another "hump" day Rams. Keep carrying that Lunch Box and working hard on ever detail, ever drill, every assignment that your coaches have and are putting in place for this week. Friday is pay day but you still have to pick up that Lunch Box an go to work to get your pay/ticket to the regional championship game. Nothing is going to be given to you, you have to take it.

 

So, will it be your Rams payday come Friday night around 10:00pm........ or Fairviews ?

 

BTW Rams, should some of you have forgotten.....do you recall the Fairview Eagles a few years ago celebrating a District Championship and jumping up and down, dancing On The "R" in the middle of Ram Stadium?

Rams could run a double tight set this week and have great success on the ground and through the air. They can do so many different things out of that set to challenge a def coordinator. With the strong backs, great Oline, poised qb, great recievers it's a off coordinators dream. Whether it's up the middle with the DC express, pitching it to Cody Kelly, or a play action downfield to Selvage or McKee. When you through a spread offense in the mix it makes it almost impossible to defend. I've questioned the play calling somewhat throughout the year in close games. But as the year has went on it seems they've finally developed a strong gameplan really put these defenses on their heels.
