Lexington Catholic used to start their seniors or if they had a large senior class, would at least try to get them in relatively early in the Senior Day game. I have no clue if they still do this, but they did at least the four years I was there. Course, we usually had a weaker opponent on the slate for Senior Day so the coaches weren't as worried about losing or getting down early.

 

Now if we had been playing the likes of Boyle Co I can't say what we would have done.

In some instances a team may have 30 or more seniors & it would be impossible to start them all. However, you could let all the seniors go out on the field as a honary captain at the coin toss.

A lot of times when a team has a larger senior class they will take their 3 (or 4 in some cases) captains and then have the seniors behind the captains go out behind them holding hands for the coin toss as honorary captains. I think that should be done a lot more on senior day than it's seen.

Bellevue actually started every senior on the team in some spot last saturday.. Normally not a tradition, but maybe sense playing a less challenging oppenent, that could be the reason...

Personally I think this is just another issue for people to complain about. The coach plays who he thinks will give him the best shot of winning, regardless of it being senior day. Thats like saying well its so and so's birthday so he should start this game. People need to toughen up and get over it, its sports. Also maybe Covcath shouldnt of scheduled St X as their Senior day game.

I think it shows alot of class on the part of the head coach to make this happen. Kids that dont see the field for an extended period of time, live for this day. So when the coach is thinking about winning a game at the high school level where its about the kids anyway, they should think about the story and the experience that a kid who doesnt see the field a whole lot, would get from that one time in his life. I dont think it has to be the whole game, but to have the satisfaction that they began the game on the field is second to none! I think in this day and age people get lost in the true meaning of what high school athletics is truly about. I am for winning as much if not more then the next guy, but when the politics and the who's who takes over at the highschool level it is definitely sad. This isnt the NFL we're discussing its the molding of young men to have satisfaction in their lives and the time when confidence and self esteem established. People REALLY dont understand what starting can do for someone unless you've been in these types of situations!
