Remember what a big story the Mark Foley emails to a male Congressional page was a couple of years ago? How many of you are aware that Foley's successor, Democratic Tim Mahoney, who ran on a platform of restoring family values, became in an even worse sex scandal (involving actual sex) and was defeated after a single term?

 

How many people are aware of the fact that Rahm Emanuel worked with Mahoney to keep the matter from affecting his re-election bid? After this story ran, news broke that Mahoney had a series of affairs and his wife filed for divorce.

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.

 

Mahoney, who is married, also promised the woman, Patricia Allen, a $50,000 a year job for two years at the agency that handles his campaign advertising, the staffers said.

 

A Mahoney spokesperson would not answer questions about the alleged affair or the settlement, but said Allen resigned of her own accord and "has not received any special payment from campaign funds."

 

Senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign, the Mahoney staffers said.

The report also said board members appointed by the President, such as Emanuel, serve terms that are far too short "for them to play a meaningful role on the Board."

If I accept your premise that the presidential appointments don't play a meaningful role then Emanuel, because was a friend of the presidient, was rewarded with a job and despite being paid millions of dollars he didn't really do anything.

When he proves himself to not be partisan and move toward the middle and do things I can get behind, I will do just that. I promise. As someone said in another thread, does disagreement and criticism mean you're not giving someone a chance or being non-supportive?

You're entitled to that opinion, however, that's could be said of any president we've ever had.

Just for the record, I challenge you to find ONE post in ONE thread where I criticized President Bush for anything other than maybe the war . . . and I am not even sure that I did that. I just questioned whether war was a Christian choice. So please watch the broad brush.

Nope, I said the system perpetuates greed and the system needs to be changed and Bush/McCain and most conservatives support the system. I have never called him a bad man, talked about his associations (I once mentioned McCains with Liddy, but I think I was just responding to someone who said Liddy wasn't all that bad), or made fun of the way any of them talk.

No matter how you want to describe greed - as a sin, as an emotion, or as a character flaw - it exists in all modern societies irrespective of the society's system of government. Castro is a greedy man. Putin is a greedy man. Greedy men and women have been with us throughout the history of the world and they will exist as long as the world is populated with humans.

To suggest that systems cannot sin for us is naive. I disagree with capital punishment and everytime it occurs by my government the system sins. A system that perpetuates the disparity between rich and poor sins for me as well.

No government ever devised by man has resulted in a citizenry free of greed. To attribute greed to a political or economic system is naive.
