Hustle, not being afraid to make the BIG call, not being intimidated by a coach or shcool's name, no make up calls and good mechanics.

Also, knowing that people didn't come to see you officiate.

replying to this....I think they are all big calls. Every foul, violation, ect when looked at hindsight lends it hand to the game. So, consistancy across the board the whole game. If you make the call in the first minute, it needs to be called in the last. Some may disagree...your thoughts?:argue:

I think alot of officals forget that they are there as a service to the players and the coaches. They should, when app., offer explainations to players and coaches about their calls so proper adjustments can be made so the same violation doesn't occur again.

I agree with this also with a few excpetions/notations....These explainations need to be given during a freethrow situation or during a dead ball. I've seen officials miss fouls/violations because they are discussing a play with coach during a live ball. As a coach and referee I learned the hard way this very thing. Also, the way a coach approaches me about a particular play also has an effect on whether or not I discuss the play with them. As mentioned above, a referee's main focus is the game and game management, not expaining every call thats made. As two very intelligent officials once told me, "You cannot misquote silence!":sssh:

Hustle, mechanics etc. are understood. Court demeanor!! Understanding the flow of the game. A lot of officials have never played the game and don't understand how to manage it without being seen.

Know the rules, hustle, have a positive demeanor and demonstrate good game management.

IMO the #1 thing that defines a good official and a better official is a thorough knowledge of the game. Not arrogance in the belief that you know everything, but are willing to admit when a call maybe amiss or when you show confidence that it was the right call and don't try to make up for it on the other end. Consistency on both ends of the quart no matter who you know.

HERE HERE:dancingpa I can not stand it when an official refuses to talk to a coach who is looking for an explaination. It also bothers me when I see an official do a bigger game, like Mason vs. Brossart and you see them hustling and being open to the coaches, them you see those same officials at say Mt. Olivet doing the Augusta/Deming game and they seem upset to have the game, thus those kids don't get the same effort. Not all, just some - And not just those officials but I am sure in other areas as well. That was just an example!!
