Okay the big problem here is everyone has the election in mind. Everyone that thinks this is okay is looking through Election glasses.

 

One of the most disrectful things to African Americans is an image of a black person hanging from anything. This brings up so many horrible memories from the past. My father- in-law's father was hung by a white man in Alabama. So for my wife who works at UK to have to walk by and see a black person hanging from a tree is totally uncalled for.

 

Being a white man I can't understand how my wife felt seeing that on campus. Because I didn't live through her grandfather being hung. Nor did she, but she has a father that is alive that is still haunted by those memories and has shared the story with my wife.

 

So take a minute and walk in another persons shoes before we assume this isn't a form of racism. It doesn't have anything to do with Obama. It has everything to do with the injustice that occured in 1937 in Dothan, Alabama.

 

As for the charge of disorderly conduct, had a young black man walked down and watched those men hanging a black man then there would have been a disorderly butt kicking or possible riot.

 

I think it is sad that this great country of ours still is divided over the issue of race. I do disagree that Ms. Palin should not have been hung either. Who knows what her family might have went through.

 

For the last time it isn't about "OBAMA!!!"

 

Why does it have to have been about race? Couldn't this have been done as a response to the morons in California that did the same to Palin? Why is it, whenever anything bad happens to an African-American in this country, people cry it was race related?

Let's suppose that this was about race. If someone makes a racist statement (like hanging a black man in effigy), is it appropriate to kick them out of school and into jail?

Personally, I could care less who they hang up. Arresting those men who put up Obama is nothing but a classic case of censorship. Most here say they're against Obama, yet they support taking away these men's first amendment rights, which is why many of you are against Obama (i.e. him being the Communist and everything). I just don't understand it.

I do not know enough about the other charges to comment but the disorderly conduct charge is ridiculous. Hanging politicians in effigy has been a tradition in this country that has nothing to do with race. It is not an activity that I would engage in but it should be protected by the First Amendment, especially when the one hanged is a government official and not a private citizen.

This country is the most culturally diverse nation to have ever existed on the face of the earth. We have multiple races, multiple languages, multiple cultures, multiple everything. OF COURSE, we are going to have racial tensions/bias from time to time. And we do in fact have a history of mistreatment of of African Americans. But, lets take a look at what is going on around the world in the present day and ONLY THEN will we see the TRULY dispicable hatred that occurs among differing cultures.

 

In Africa, death comes to the door everyday as warring tribes face off against one another. Anyone see Hotel Rwanda?? Anyone ever heard of the Sudan?? In the Middle East bias has torn the religion of Islam into warring factions among the Sunni and Shiite. Never mind the Kurds. The Koreans and Japanese loathe one another. It goes on and on but you get my point.

 

We have become so pathetically weak-minded in this country that we actually think uttering a racial epithet is worthy of "Hate Crime" status. It's pathetic, truly it is. I have been lucky enough to travel extensively in foreign lands and have seen some truly sickening instances of what TRUE racism/bias can lead to. What about the case of Virginia v. Black? It held that a state statute is constitutional if it bars any object (i.e. a burning cross) that is placed on public or private property with the intent to intimidate.

I have heard no evidence that the UK incident was done with the intent to intimidate. The two students' explanation that the hanging was intended as a political statement and a response to the California incident involving a Palin figure seems plausible to me - at least plausible enough to constitute reasonable doubt in a trial. I would like to know more details about the other charges but the disorderly conduct charge on its own strikes me as ridiculous.

Was this trully a hate crime or was some idiot college students playing a "prank" for attention?
