I was wondering how everyone feels about the Tony Franklin System and if they think this is right for GCHS? Also what does a team need to have as far as talent to make this system work? Any thoughts.

I don't question the system. Does a team have the athletes to run a "system". That has to be decided by the coaching staff. GC has 57 points in 7 games, is it the system or the execution?

There have been cases where certain team tendencies have made it easy for them to lock down on formation alignments, etc. With the right OC you self scout and add balance to your tendencies and setting up the defense for a big play.

They don't have the overwhelming Talent to run this offense at a level to beat the good teams. Much like Hoover High school in Ala. a few years ago do you thing they really had to run that offense to be effective. NO! They could have won just as many games in the pro I, Power I, or any other offense b/c they had outstanding talent.

I'm not sure about that (easy to scout). I know that it is sometimes hard to defend because everything is so spread out. Raceland has used it to set up the run this year. Also, running a diverse attack helps. We run the wishbone, hurry up, power I, no backs and a variation of the wing T all out of the spread look. That is why I say you have to cater to your talent. Raceland has a big, strong line and 2 backs that could start for any team I know, so you have to run. Two years ago, Raceland didn't have a running game and relied mostly on the "Air Raid" attack.

Agree with you Leonidas. If you want to win championships don't think this system will help look at Auburn and they have the talent. Franklin was fired halfway through the season.

Russell DC Garry Morris has slowed it down many a time.

Who is GCHS? This has been stated in the past - but there are too many schools who are MC, BC, GC etc. to use the two letter abbreviations. This is confusing for many of the posters. Thanks

Yes it is easy to scout if you have nearly equal talent and are disciple you can stop it. Great examples are Belfry and (as pointed out above) Russell.

It's like any other offense, if you do only one thing, it will hurt you. I know that some teams run 99% of the time and are successful, but they run in different ways, misdirection, fakes, straight dives, blast plays.

 

I was against the system at first, but I can see it as an effective offense now that I have seen it for several years. It is a diverse offense that can cause defenses some trouble. Especially, if it is put together with a potent running game.

 

By spreading the defense out, it benefits the running game, and having a potent passing attack it makes the defense respect the pass. When you can only have 5-6 in the box with 5 OL and 1-2 backs the odds are in the offense's favor. Plus, you force the defense to be in man-to-man coverage. If you have 1-2 quality receivers, with man-to-man coverage the offense has a big advantage as well.

 

The simple fact is: you take what the defense gives you. If they are a good pass defense, you run and make them adjust. If they are a good run defense, you pass and spread their run stoppers out. The system is no different then any other offense, it is set up for the short 5 yds gains, to go against the weakness of the opposing defense.

 

The system, like every offense, has to be bent to the the personnel. If you have a good QB and 1-2 good receivers, then you pass more, if you have 1-2 good running backs, you run more, but no matter what you do the most, you have to run the ball and pass the ball both.
